Pregnant after a Loss

When are you going on maternity leave?

edited May 2014 in Pregnant after a Loss
More questions from ball.and.chain! I was hoping to work until a couple of days before my EDD just because I'd rather use my maternity leave to bond with my son than lying around waiting for him. But several moms have recently told me there is no way I will want to be working at 38-39 weeks. Am I nutso/delusional/naive? When are you planning on going on leave? (Or if you already have kids, when did you go out before)? Feel free to elaborate below!

  • Well I'm a teacher. I am 34 weeks today. I get out of school June 6 a Friday. My due date is June 19.

Baby is breech so if c section will be scheduled week before so I could have her the Monday after school lets out if that is the day they choose for me.

I also drive an hour to work. I'm starting to swell hands feet. But trying to stay for the rest of the year for my kids.

That was my guess.  :)  I am pretty much the same.  I have a long commute though (usually close to 90 minutes each way, drive + subway + walking) and I think that's ultimately what will do me in.  Hoping I might be able to convince them to let me work from home for the last week or so.

I don't know yet since it is still early days for me. I'm a teacher and my EDD is about 10 days before the end of the semester. I'd like to work as long as I can, but realistically, I know a lot of things will be out of my control by then. I have no idea if this baby will arrive early or late, or if I'll be up for my long commute then, etc.

  • I'm an SS. With DS, I resigned to be a SAHM but my last day was a week before he was born. I was tired but not to the point where I couldn't have worked that last week and if I was trying to conserve maternity leave, I'd probably have worked until the last possible day.

I would also consider whether I knew my EDD was the actual end date (either needing to be induced by then or a C-section) or if there was a possibility I could go 1-2 weeks past my EDD. Then I definitely wouldn't want to waste the time off unless I was feeling really crappy at the end.
  • Working until he comes. I did the same with DS. He was born on a Monday and I worked til the Friday before. I don't want to cut into my time at home with the baby!

With my daughter I was out of work starting a week before I had her, because my bosses chose to time their vacation at that time.  They were convinced I'd go early...  It wasn't great.  My sister was in town, and we just stared at my belly for a week willing me to go into labor.  We had plenty of time to try old wives tales, but I wasn't getting paid, and it wasn't a great plan.  This time I'm planning on sticking it out until I go into labor.

  • I plan to take two weeks before my due date; all of my friends suggested it, and given that I have a full year with the little lady (yay Canada), I don't feel guilt cutting into my time with her. I know myself and will want the rest after the year I've had, especially in the blistering heat...but we'll see as I get closer!

With my son I left at 38 weeks. I was preschool teacher at that point and there was a lot of physical activity on my side. I just couldn't do it. I was all swollen and tired all the time. But here in Canada we get a whole year of maternity so it was ok :)

This will be me too.  My water broke at work last time.  I actually work only 10 minutes from the hospital but live 50 minutes from the hospital so I might as well be at work.   :)

Like @andrea ri 80 - I've organized a list of my duties and who on my staff will be taking over these duties and given that to my manager.  I'll have to do a little work while on maternity leave but it should only equal about 3 -4 days total.

How long is everyone staying out?  I'll be out a full 10 weeks and then I'll go back part-time, 3 days a week for a month, then 4 days a week until I use up my full 12 weeks.

I chose SS...being that it's twins, I will be taken out early, probably around 32 weeks like the last twin pregnancy.  I will only have 8 weeks after the birth if it's a C, or 6 weeks if it's a vaginal delivery.  US sucks in that aspect!

@LifeOfCat - jealous!!!!!!  Doesn't the father get paternity leave up there too?

  • This is all good info!  Makes me feel like I am not totally insane to want to hang on until my EDD.  I figure he'll be late anyway so if I go out ahead of time, I could be sitting around for 3-4 weeks without a baby.

I voted ss because I'm having twins and didn't want to skew the poll. I think I'll probably be off by 32 weeks, but I believe I'll be able to take disability until the babies come, so it won't cut into my maternity leave.
With DD I went off at just before 38 weeks (my last day was a Friday, and I think my ticker change day was Tuesday, so really my first day off work was the Monday, one day before I was 38 weeks). She was over a week late, so I was getting pretty bored. On the other hand, I was mentally done at work and it was uncomfortable to sit at a desk all day, and I get a year off, so it wasn't a big deal to me to use up a couple weeks of maternity leave.

With DD I worked up until my induction was scheduled at 41weeks, I then had 3 days at home before she came. This time since I am having a scheduled RCS on July 9th and July 4th is a Friday I am planning on my last day to be July 3rd. Then I have the weekend plus a couple days the following week to nest and spend time with DD.

The father can choose to take paternity leave, but it eats into my own leave, so DH will probably just take a few weeks off and then try to work from home a bit more (he manages a store, bit more flexible!)

  • I plan to work until my due date unless my OB recommends otherwise.  I want as much time off with the baby as possible.    I've only been working 30 hours since a couple of weeks after my MC, and that's the minimum for full time for my company.  If I had to work 40, I may have a different answer.  If I keep getting scheduled for 10 and 12 hour days, that may change things as well.
