Short story: Charlotte (Charlie) Grace born 5/2/14 at 9:30 am. 6 lbs 7 oz, 20 inches of perfection.
Super Long Story: Wed night (4/30) around 6:00 PM I decided to take a shower. I felt like earlier I lost my mucus plug, but turns out it was just a piece of the bag breaking. No gush, no crazy story, just felt like I was leaking more than usual into panty liners. I called the hospital and they told me to come in just in case. Got there, tested, and my water had broken. Yay!
I was admitted at 8:00 and was already having contractions about 2-3 minutes apart but I didn't feel them. About 4 hours later with no progression we started the pit drip. By 8 the next morning I was only dilated to 2 or 3 so they kept turning up the drip. I started to feel lots of pain and asked for my options. New Dr came in and said I should do pain meds for 4 hours and she would come back and check to see about the epidural. The next 2 hours were excruciating as the pit was turned up so high I was having 90 second contractions with about 10 seconds in between, and having back labor which we discovered later. Enter ugly meltdown and asking for epi NOW. Yikes.
I then continued on the drip for another 15 extremely frustrating hours, dilating SO slowly. Finally at 6:30 am on Friday they said I could start pushing. I felt pretty hot, and they realized I had a fever of 103 and that because my water broke so long ago, I had chorioamnionitis, an infection in the fluid. Because of that, after she came out she was going to have a stay in the NICU to get antibiotics for 48 hours to make sure she didn't also get infected. So push and push I did, and she was slowly moving down but they figured out she was sunny side up so I pushed on my side to try and flip her. After 3 hours of pushing and breathing oxygen in between contractions, Charlie's little heart rate was declining rapidly so the doc quickly decided she needed to use the vacuum. 3 more pushes and out she came, cord wrapped around her neck and meconium all over her. My OB told me not to worry but I wouldn't hear her cry until they cleaned her lungs out. I immediately looked at my husband and started sobbing, and he did too. Then we finally heard her cry and my heart exploded. He was able to take a few pictures of her and they brought her to me to see her before they took her away.
The next 2 days were filled with pumping and trying to nurse and going back and forth to the NICU. We are now at home and after a really hard first few days, she is now successfully nursing with nipple shields and gaining weight back well. The transformation I have seen in my husband has been amazing and he is a total softie now! I fall more in love with him every time I see him hold and kiss her.
Thank you ladies for all of your continued support, advice, love tits, and hugs. My life has been changed by meeting you all and I am so thankful to have found this group. Good luck to all of you and I can't wait to lurk and see everyone's amazing rainbows! XOX
