Bottle vs. breast volume comparison?

DD is breastfed during the day and drinks 7 ounces of formula at bedtime every night. Today I took my son shopping out of town and left DD with DH for a while. Since I BF during the day, I didn't know how much breast milk to leave for her.

DH gave her a 6 ounce bottle of breast milk, which she drank in 15 minutes. He said she seemed satisfied, and she took a great nap after a little wake time.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, and to prepare for when we wean at 6 months, do you know how that 6 ounces of breast milk would compare to a nursing session? Do you think she normally takes about that much when nursing, or less because she has to work harder at the breast?

  • Generally it's around an ounce an hour between feedings. So if you are going to be away 4 hours, 4 ounces would be enough. This is just a guideline though. It works well for us if you want anecdotal evidence.

I'm not exactly sure. I pump for 15 mins. at work and usually get 4oz. So, I assume that is what she would get if I nursed her for 15 mins.?
  • 6oz sounds like a lot to me. I would guess that most of my feedings are 3-4 oz (except maybe motn after he's slept a while and I'm a bit engorged).

If LO is STTN, he may need more than 1-1.5oz per hour you're gone. I'm gone around 9 hrs a day and I leave 20 oz of breastmilk per pedi's recommendation.

As for whether LO is getting that much from the breast, it is prob more like 3-5 oz but the only way to tell is a weighted feed.
  • Thanks, girls. Lauren is sttn (except recently she's learned how to roll in the crib and then fusses), and only eats 5 times a day. If she is supposed to get 25-32 ounces per day (the standard guideline), maybe she is doing 6 ounces per feeding during the day.

I only get 3-4 ounces in 15 minutes when I pump, but they say a baby is much more efficient. I drive myself crazy trying to figure out the numbers on this! Part of the reason I didn't BF the other two kids was because I like being able to KNOW how much they are eating.

That is a great article and has a calculator for how much.  BM is different than formula..you don't need to increase the amount as they grow like you do formula.  My daughter has 4 ounces every 3 1/2 hours or so when I am away.
