Tylenol and vax

I'm so nervous about LO getting her shots this week...I've heard some people give their babies infant Tylenol a little ahead of time to help with pain and recovery.

I bought some today, grape flavor? But my baby is under the weight limit for a dose to "ask your doctor"...she is 11.5 lbs and I'm wondering if it is ok to give it to her and how much should I give her? @babycaps‌ ?

Re: Tylenol and vax

  • Do not give it before vaccinations. You can give it after if LO develops the low grade temperature and is uncomfortable. Here is the chart I was given by my pedi. You might check with yours to be sure though.

  • There is new research showing the use of Tylenol with vaccinations can make them less effective. I don't know how true this is but I was discussing it with a friend and her daughter got RSV while being vaccinated for it ... She always gave Tylenol. We decided not to risk it and have never given it.

  • I don't see the point in giving meds as a precaution.  My kids rarely got fevers, or had very low grade fevers, after their shots so it would have been giving them meds for no reason.  And Tylenol ahead of time would help with the pain of the shot itself.

Plus like McSweets says, there's some research saying that the body's normal response to the shots (fever) is what helps in making it effective.

  • I'm with @BrideNamedMeg‌. I'm not going to pre-dose. But I think I might officially be the world's most blasé FTM; I'm not at all anxious about his first shots. If anything I'm looking forward to them! Immunity FTW!

But yeah, I think the potential benefit of pre-dosing the tylenol (maybe would have less of what is likely to be a very mild fever anyway) don't outweigh the potential risk (vax not working as well).

  • Thanks everyone!! I will keep it on hand and use only if fever develops...

  • Try non medicated ways to bring down a fever. A cool cloth wipe down usually worked for my older kids.

We just got back from getting Ellie's shots and her pedi said that Tylenol beforehand is unnecessary and not to give her any afterward unless her fever gets over 100.3.

We had ours today too. This is what our pedi told us, or if he's really cranky we could also. So far he's been fine as long as I'm holding him. If I'm not, then he's screaming. Looks like it's time to rent some movies and snuggle for the night :)

Aubrey is having them tomorrow and I've been hoping she won't get a fever or have a bad reaction. Mainly because I won't give her the Tylenol. I've also heard the research about it making the vaccinations less effective and I found this article from a pediatrician in Montana and what she says makes sense to me: https://www.mtwholehealth.com/2013/07/just-say-no-to-tylenol-acetaminophen-causes-autism And no, like this woman, I don't think Tylenol single handedly causes autism. I just agree that what she says, makes sense to a non-medical doctor person, like myself. I am NOT attempting an autism debate either. I just read an article, that made sense to me. I took Tylenol throughout my pregnancy and still take it. I'm just not giving it to her, because, why not?

I might try the lemon balm glycerite that she talks about, if that doesn't work and she's absolutely losing her shit I'll consider getting her a pain killer. My arm didn't really hurt that bad and only when touched when I had the TDAP, everyone's reactions are different. So, she may not react at all (I hope). Update: LO had her shots today and so far has had no reactions to them! So happy that it worked out that way! I did get the lemon balm extract and the dr. Looked up correct dosage while we were there and we gave it to her, an it seemed to calm her after a little bit. Boy did she scream when they stuck her though, my poor little!

  • I'm taking Skylee for hers this week as well. Not planning to premedicate but I do have Tylenol on hand for afterwards just in case she reacts badly to it. I'm a little nervous but I'm actually more anxious for her to get them and have more of an immunity to things.

  • My LO had her shots today. She was a little fussy and drowsy most of the day, but just held her and put ice compresses on her little legs per pediatrician suggestions. Our pediatrician also mentioned Tylenol decreasing efficiency of shots.
  • DD had her shots yesterday, and was a wreck by evening time (fever, tummy cramping) so I gave her a half dose of Tylenol after a full feed and that sorted it. I'm glad I didn't give it to her beforehand, but I'm glad I had it on hand. She was fussy all day today, but we didn't re-dose and she's been fine.

  • Update: LO had rotavirus and Dtap shot today. No Tylenol...she's doing well!

  • I just can't imagine making my children sit in pain or discomfort when I can take that pain away. My arm was useless and I felt so much pain after my last dtap. That was ONE shot, LO's get 4 or 5 shots at just 2 months old. I can't even imagine how their little legs feel.

I mean to each their own but if I'm going to make them get these shots. The least I can do is help their recovery go smoothly by giving them a little Tylenol afterwards.

Nevermind the fact that article was so wishy washy on if there is a link "maybe there is maybe there isn't" to autism. The science and researcher side of me says it's not enough to draw conclusions and change my lifestyle.

I mean at what point do you say screw it she needs the meds?

This is why we are spreading out the shots. LO got 2 yesterday and will get 2 next week. Getting all those shots at once in a tiny leg has got to hurt! And I don't like the idea of so many vaccines/new and foreign things entering her body all at once.

That's what we do also. We get half of the shots at one visit and the other a week later. I have done it this way with all of my kids and never had any problems. Also never had any problems with fevers doing it this way.

I have seen a few things out there about Tylenol that make me wonder about this. I started digging a little deeper this week and found a few different studies and stats making me think that she is onto something... It definitely made me take note and I won't be so quick to give it to LO.
