Basically it's a swim top for boys. My son is taking swimming lessons at our Y and he gets too cold without the rash guard. I would definitely use one outside to offer more sun protection.
Rash guards are not just for boys, they are for everyone! One great advantage is that most rash guards provide SPF50 or more, they make it much easier to make sure your child is well protected from the sun since you don't have to apply sunscreen as often to that area. Same goes for adults, I wear them when we swim because then I don't need help protecting my back!

This is the one I ordered for DD for this summer's outdoor swim time: i play. Unisex-Baby Infant One Pece Sunsut,3T,Pink Seahorse I sized up so it is HUGE on her now but will hopefully last next summer as well. We have a pool and it is far easier to throw this on her and slather sunscreen on the few exposed areas than do a full-body slather.
I also bought i play. Unisex-Baby Infant Breathe Easy Sun Protective Shirt, Aqua, Large/X-Large/18-24 Months for DD to wear out of the pool.
And I got this for myself too! Coolibar UPF 50+ Women's Long-Sleeve Swim Shirt (Medium - Cobalt/Azure Pebble)
