Bringing LO to Work - Help!

I'm back to work on Monday and I'm super lucky that I get to bring LO with me until she is 6mos. I'm really excited to not have to put her in daycare and keep her with me longer, but I'm really concerned about managing my team and getting everything done with a baby in tow. I have a meeting tomorrow with my boss and the deputy director of HR to discuss what accommodations I need for my situation. My problem is that I have absolutely NO IDEA what I need. I thought we had mostly covered this with my prior supervisor in the months before I had LO but nothing was covered with HR and all we really agreed on was me doing VTC to meetings so I could participate and be muted so baby wouldn't be a distraction. I just planned on being in my office mostly and having an area set up for LO in the corner. What am I not thinking of here? Any ideas for what I need to cover in this meeting?

Re: Bringing LO to Work - Help!

  • I bring LO with me twice a week. I'll come back and give you my tips when I'm done with my meeting.

  • I take him to work with me daily but he is so chill. I don't answer the phone while he's there (outside the office calls) and keep my door closed. I have a bassinet and a swing. The only other thing I need is I refrigerate his milk in the fridge and pump at work.
  • Awesome, thank you @nlane0723‌!!

I was planning on bringing a swing and a pnp like you @babylimas‌. Does that keep LO quiet and entertained enough to get your work done? Do you end up putting in more time to get all tasks accomplished? What about when you leave the office? It seems like it would be a bad idea to leave LO in the office with a monitor, but what if I just have to go to the bathroom? Or check on my team down the hall for a minute?
  • Again will is way more chill than a typical baby. Until recently he was still sleeping for 20 hours a day. Now I have started putting him in a wrap loosely so he is in my arms but I can still work. I also leave him in my office. I have been known to run to the post office and tell my co workers to listen out. Haha. Of course another caveat is I work with my H and his best friend. They are my bosses and it's a very relaxed office.
  • I'm glad to hear you're OK with leaving LO for a minute. Several of my staff have offered to help but I don't want to take advantage or make them feel like they HAVE to because I'm their boss. I didn't think it'd be too awful to ask someone if they'd mind keeping an ear out while I run down the hall. I did plan on a lot of baby wearing so hopefully it won't come up too often.
  • I'm loving this thread! With my replacement not working out, I'll most likely end up taking LO to work with me to train a new replacement.

  • @NanaCook‌ I posted in Working Moms too of you're looking for more advice/suggestions.
  • Sorry! It took longer then expected. I also have a very chill baby like @babylimas‌ so I don't have a bunch on things activity wise. I did buy a bouncer for the office and she either sleeps in that or in the huge armchair next to my desk (isn't rolling yet). If you are breastfeeding, I recommend getting a refrigerator for your office. I refrigerate my pumping parts so I don't have to wash/sanitize them after every pump session (I pump if she sleeps through a feeding). I baby wear when she's fussy so I can keep working. My office is lax so I don't have much advice in the "what to discuss with boss/HR" department.

I also recommend designating a drawer or cabinet in your office for baby supplies (diapers, wipes, extra clothes, socks, blanket, etc.) so you don't have to lug a diaper bag back and forth everyday.

  • Ooh, good call on the drawer. Thanks for all the tips!
  • Nice. Good idea on a drawer. I'm going to do that.
  • Also, I unsuggest my post on the working moms board where everyone thinks it's a horrible, neglectful idea to bring your LO to work.
  • Hahaha. Way to create drama @akflutterby. ;) those responses are just silly. And way to make those of us with no choice in the matter feel guilty. Plenty of people work from home with baby. Our difference is just that it's in an office.
  • Gotta do something to keep the board interesting! Lol. I hope it goes as well as I envision. I really do want to have her with me and not be neglected. But I haven't had enough mommy guilt so far so I'm probably due a dose or two.
