Sushi--- Any cooked rolls/options out there?

Ok, so from what I've been told sushi is a big no no..

Has anyone come across rolls etc that are cooked? I'm dying for sushi! :(

Yea, I usually go to a highly reputable place in Chicago. I plan on calling them before we visit next week to get a handle on the menu. I usually go with a friend of mine and don't want to make it completely obvious that "something is up" by not ordering or acting funny... As it's not out in the open to friends and family yet that we are expecting.

Seriously- you can eat the raw ones. Unless you get your sushi from a gas station or grocery store.

I can't understand why anyone would think that gas station sushi is a good idea to begin with.

OP like others said, so long as it's a reputable restaurant you should be fine. If it makes you feel better to play it extra safe, you can go with items like tempura rolls, Unagi, or California rolls (which are often made with a fully cooked imitation crab anyway). Not many people pay tons of attention to what's cooked/raw when it comes to sushi so unless your friend is a real connoisseur or foodie, there's a chance he or she may not even notice if you're sticking to cooked items alone.

When I lived in VA Beach, the grocery store I went to had really good sushi!

OP if you are really concerned, imitation crab and shrimp are obviously cooked. But really, you should be fine.

Also, DH and I make our own anyway (mmm raw tuna)!
  • Ditto to all what others said. But if you're still worried and don't like california rolls, hae you ever looked at menus? Bet ya you would find loads of stuff made with cooked (tempura) shrimp...
  • I had this same dilema and question yesterday and decided to do a lot of research to make sure it was safe before I ate any. From what I gathere,d it is safe just as long as you stay away from fish that are high in mercury. I  had a fried roll that had yellowtail in it and all I did was politely ask if they could fry the yellowtail until it was cooked all the way. They did but luckily before I ate it I found it was a high mercury fish, so I just picked it out lol. I enjoyed it the same. But like the other ladies said, as long as it's from a reputable place, I'm confident you'll be fine

    ;)
  • I eat raw sushi occasionally but only from places I trust. My favorite cooked roll is the crunchy roll though, especially with a little spicey mayo. It usually has a crab mixture and avocado on the inside and rolled in tempura flakes on the outside. So good!

  • Is it dynamite rolls that have tempura shrimp in them? Cali rolls are cooked too. And what's the one with smoked salmon and cream cheese? Smoked fish would be fine. As is raw fish IMO. I still eat it. Mmmm this post is making me hungry.

H would get a tongue lashing if he ever tried to police my food. Controlling much?

I normally don't roll my eyes at your posts but way to blow this one comment out of proportion.

I think a partner that pays that much attention to what his partner eats & plays food police on a pregnant woman is over-stepping boundaries.

So yeah, it's controlling to tell someone what they can & cannot eat...

  • Also, I promise I'm not talking out of my ass. Many of the abusive/controlling relationships I've seen started small (food, clothing, etc).

Not saying this partner (of OP) is an abusive dickweed, but that getting too crazy over food policing can be much.

As I said, H knows I'm a big girl & can eat what I feel is right for me (pg or not). Just because a woman is pg does not automatically mean she needs help with food choices from their partner. They are pregnant, not dumb.

He's just a big worrier and heard the midwives say it and no to deli meat, hot dogs etc.. so now he has it in his head about that.. Even tho with the sushi thing I told him that most is frozen before being prepped as sushi.

I AM not worried... But it was just good to hear from others that are PG or have been before.

    So thank you!!

  • Any sushi that is described as "maki" is made with cooked or otherwise non-raw-fish ingredients.

But yeah, I'm with everyone else that says just eat the sushi as long as you're not somewhere dodgy.

  • I've had sushi quite a few times of all types!  It is my favorite food, but I only go to my norm places- no new places.

I agree with Primrose.  My husband has far too much respect for me to ever second guess my ability to make good decisions for myself or our children.  I can't imagine him ever telling me what I could or couldn't eat.

This. I am 32 years old. I don't need anyone telling me what I can and cannot eat .

  • I actuallly had sushi once a week during my first pregnancy and my doctor didn't advise me against it. Incidentally, my 2.5 year old eats sushi right off my plate. The important thing is to be careful about the type of fish- nothing high in merrcury (the big fish i.e. tuna, swordfish), and that you're getting sushi from a top notch place.

Wegmans and Harris Teeter! They both have delicious sushi rolls.

Dude wegmans has a new roll - like the Mango Tango roll or something?

    SO GOOD.

I need to investigate this roll.

So not sure where you live? But there is a Sushi place in Vienna called Sweet Ginger that sells a roll called the Bagel Roll, its shrimp, cream cheese, cucumber and some other goodies (sorry cant remember just remember delish!) Well the whole rolls is inside out meaning the rice is on the inside and wrapped on the outside with seaweed.  Its then battered and fried, so that ingredients are cooked.  I love it..I would just ask for the sauce on it to be put on the side. The sauce is rather spicy! so it could have some negative effects like Heartburn.
