Iron Deficient Anemia

Apparently one of the reasons my MS has felt so severe is that I developed moderate iron deficient anemia (my hemoglobin is 9.3 currently).  Not a huge surprise given that I often run slightly anemic, but I have never seen such a low level!  If you've experienced this or something similar please let me know.

My questions:

How quickly will iron supplements correct the issue?  Will it completely correct?

The racing heart, fatigue, and low blood pressure are all normal, given the condition, right?  (RE's office said yes but I want reassurance ;) )

If you were me, what else would you want to know?

(Edited because words are hard)

I had this with DS. The iron supplements kicked my m/s into overdrive (sorry, I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear!) so I really upped my dietary iron intake. I would eat a spinach omelette with a glass of orange juice for breakfast, have some form of red meat at least once a day, and when I could stomach tomatoes, cook tomato sauce in cast iron skillet, plus work in other sources of iron. I was still borderline anemic, but not as bad. All those crappy symptoms resolved pretty quickly when my iron started going up. It took maybe a week?

Thanks for this.  I've been eating a lot of cooked spinach, quinoa, and eggs to try to make up for it.  Started iron supps yesterday.  So far no real change in symptoms but it's only been a few days of diet change.

Meat in general is not great for me right now but I may try to hide some red meat in the diet somewhere.

I don't have any advice, but I'm glad you found the issue and hope you feel better soon!

I had to start iron supplements for anemia a few weeks ago.  I take them with breakfast and they haven't made any of my symptoms worse.  On the flip side, I don't think that they've made the exhaustion or other symptoms better, either!

  • I have been taking iron for over a month. I have not had any issues. They don't upset my stomach. My dr did say not to take them with milk so I don't take them in the morning since I eat cereal every morning.
