I can't take it anymore

6 days of progressively worsening migraine headaches. The doc gave me Tylenol 3. Not helping. Other than falling asleep for a little bit, I'm getting no relief. Any suggestions? I have to go to work tomorrow! And I have to be able to drive 3 hours to see my mom on saturday and back home on Sunday. .. (surprise mother's day visit)

Might sound dumb, do I just rub in on my forehead?

  • The chiropractor along with using lavender and peppermint oil helped me. Good luck, hope you get some relief!
  • Are you usually a caffeine drinker?? and If you are, are you still drinking caffeine ??

@kmgriff0709‌ yes and yes. I drink one or two sodas per week. But I have been drinking one a day this week. .. not helping.

  • Oh that stinks :( I was a huge caffeine drinker and when I found out I was pregnant I quit cold turkey! I use to drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day and 2-3 sodas. I had border line migraines for weeks after I quit. My OB told me it was okay to have a certain amount of caffeine daily but it stil worried me. My headaches are gone now, but I treat myself to one or two cups of coffee a week. Anyways maybe you should talk to your OB and see what he/she says. Sorry you are having to deal with this!! @suprsuz

  • My doctor prescribed me floricet for my migraines. It's helped me a lot.
  • This may sound weird but try a Benadryl or two! That helps me.

@Firemanswife11‌ trying it. What do I have to lose at this point. Im calling my ob in the morning to see if she will call in a prescription for fioricet. . I am a headache expert (I have water on the brain) and this is worse than that. Gah!!!

  • @suprsuz I hope it helps. I suffer from migraines and I randomly discovered that Benadryl seems to help sometimes. Something to do with reducing swelling or something.

Sounds legit. Usually I would blow off advicefrom a non doctor but I'm desperate and since we are all in the same boat I sort of trust your advice.

  • So sorry! I used to have migraines and was prescribed Imitrex for them. Thankfully, when I went off BC they went away miraculously!

The only things that helped were...

cold washcloths on my forehead and over my eyes
resting without the tv on or any sound
    lights off
a coke (to take with the medicine)
    a hot bath to relax

It was hard to rest for that long when I felt like I should be lesson planning, grading, etc. but it was the only thing that worked.

  • Migraine sufferer here. During pregnancy, I find half a benadryl at night prevents recurrence in the morning. If it is still there, I do a shot of espresso with Tylenol. Acupuncture is really helpful, too.
  • I also took floricet and it helped me a lot too. I hope you feel better soon.

  • You can dilute it with olive oil and run onto your temples. Look up a how to. I am new to oils but this one helps me.

  • I was going to suggest acupuncture. It's never really helped my migraines but I know it gives many relief. I find that if I can keep from getting a sinus headache, then that helps bc my sinus headaches always lead to migraines. Nasal spray and a humidifier has helped. It sucks; I'm sorry all of us suffer this way.

I have the same problem.  Sometimes I have to fall asleep with ice on my head and neck - it doesn't make it go away but dulls it enough to sleep for a few hours.  I agree with the cranial massage and trigger point massage suggestions.  Try the ice for sleeping - it really has helped a lot for me.

I just went through the exact same thing..a week if headaches and dr prescribing Tylenol 3 with no relief. I ended up getting Tylenol Sinus which helped a lot. Yours could be sinus pressure so try that. Hope you feel better soon:)
  • Aww :( I've been there...except it was 4 days. 4 days too many. I hope you find some relief soon. :(

  • You guys are troopers. My nose is so sensitive, the smell of peppermint oil gives me a headache.

  • I've had migraines for many years. My tips, if the meds aren't working:

    - Feet in very hot water, with an ice pack on your head
    - Stick your finger on your ear, pretty hard (similar to the ear-pulling suggestion) -- it only works for as long as your finger is in your ear, but it does offer some relief. Best if someone else does it for you.
    - Slow your breathing down as much as possible. Slow and steady, imagine the muscles in your head and neck relaxing. Do this for a long time.
    - Hard back-scratching
    - Sometimes, lying down flat makes it worse. It can be better to sit in a restful way -- for example, sit on the couch, facing the back of it, and lean forward so your forehead can rest on the back of the couch.

What I've found is that I have to somehow interrupt the pain feedback cycle, or it keeps getting worse, which makes me tense up more, resulting in increased pain, etc.

When I'm not preggie, I get my husband to give me a VERY HARD foot rub. It seems to really interrupt the pain and calm the headache-indued nausea enough so I can eat a little something. But I'm not sure about doing this while pregnant.

You can also look into the Back Knobber or Spoonk mat (with the mat, check with your doc first -- using it hurts).

I'll also snack on frozen cherries sometimes, which seems to helped with migraine nausea. Also helps me to eat salt, and drink a bit of caffeine.

Good luck! You'll come out of it. Keep resting and try to stay hydrated.
