So I asked DH to move out...

just for a few days until he is no longer sick.  Or he can go to the doctor - the choice is his.  He has been fighting what seems like a cold that he calls allergies for over a week now and last night he was hacking up a lung and couldn't eat dinner becasue he was coughing so much.  He also started running a fever.  I told him I think it is time to see a doctor and to please isolate himself to one room in the house because I really cannot afford for DS (or DD) to get sick given he is having surgery next week.  He slept in the living room last night (in an open floor plan house) so I dont really call that isolating himself.

I just get so pissed off that he refuses to go to the doctor when he is obviously sick.  Am I overreacting to this?  Any other suggestions for how I should handle this becasue I doubt he is going to sleep at his parents like I asked him to.

Is there a reason he can't isolate himself to your bedroom? That seems to make more sense to me than having him leave the house entirely. I'd be upset if my DH was that sick and refusing to see a doctor too.

  • Ooo you scared me. No you aren't being unreasonable if DS is going to have surgery soon. If DH got sick and one of the kiddos was supposed to be having surgery then I'd go to my mom's and he would stay home. My mom has bedrooms for us and a playroom that's why I would go instead of him.

  • If he has a virus (which it sounds like he probably has) going to the doctor is not going to do anything to help.  Tell him to drink lots of fluids and take some Tylenol Cold for his symptoms, which is about all that can be done for a virus.

Otherwise, I think it's reasonable to have him isolate himself to one room in order to keep your DS from getting sick before surgery.

If it's a virus, like @sunflowersbride said- a doctor can't do anything. If its pneumonia, chances are it's not contagious to you or the kids. But I agree, he needs to be seen by a doctor because it COULD be something serious or infectious.

Moving out seems like a drastic measure. I'd just have him stay in the master bedroom and away from the kids if you are really concerned.
  • DS and H had a bad cold that turned into pneumonia for H and DS had to be on a breathing treatment and meds for 10 days a few weeks ago. Neither I nor DD got it bc I lysoled the shit out of every door handle and anti-baced DS' hands every time he coughed, sneezed, etc. If I had to suction out his nose, I washed and anti-baced. I opened windows, etc. H took himself to the doc's on his own accord. It's shitty that he's not going prob bc he thinks he can fight it off on his own....I'm presuming. Tell him to go to an urgent care outpatient place. Quick and painless. They'll give him a steroid shot in his ass if it's what my H had. Other than that, it's painless.

  • I wish he would stay in the master bedroom when he is sick like I do but he never does.  I think he got the message this morning though because when I came home tonight he had cleaned and lysoled the main living areas and was in the spare bedroom instead of theliving room.  It probaby is just a virus, I have just never heard him cough as bad as he was last night and it makes me worry.

funny story that shows how much he hates going to the doctors: Back when we were dating I had noticed a bite on his leg and told him it looked infected.  He shrugged it off and within a few days he had a fever of 104.  I tried to take him to the doctor but the only doctor he had ever been to was his pedi.  She agreed to see him and he wound up being admitted to the hospital that day.  Because the admitting doc was a pedi, he spent a week in the locked peidatrics ward.  He was 25 at the time!
    hah, thats hilarious!
