Hi, intro and question

I had my first ultrasound yesterday, according to LMP, I'm 9 weeks, 4 days. All we really saw was a sac with tiny things in it, doctor said the sac measured at just over 7 weeks but no baby and no heartbeat. So she wants me to decide between a natural mc and a D&C. However, I've read several stories where women have had similar experiences as this, went in a week or two later and saw a baby and a heartbeat. Maybe the baby is hiding and it's too early for a heartbeat? My question is, has anyone had this experience or known anyone with this experience? I don't want to get my hopes up, but I don't want to completely give up hope if there's even the slightest chance that this nightmare isn't real. Thanks in advance.

Like PP said, you'd be able to see a baby. I'm sorry for your loss. My first u/s at 7w6d showed an embryo measuring 5w6d and a faint heartbeat. I am certain on my dates because we were only able to be intimate once that month due to crazy schedules. The next u/s 10 days later showed the no growth and no heartbeat. I'm so sorry, but at 9w4d you should have been able to see more.

It is possible you ovulated later and could be less than 9 weeks BUT even if you were 7 weeks there should be a heartbeat visible. I don't think things are looking good but I would obviously want to feel sure before scheduling a D&C. At this point you could wait to see if you M/C naturally. If you do, then you know, if you don't than maybe you could ask you doc to check another U/S so that you can feel comfortable before any intervention.

At 7 weeks there should be a heartbeat. However, I have a friend who is one of those weird cases where her baby wasn't growing and the doctor suggested a D&C. She asked for a week to see if she could miscarry naturally. The next week the baby had caught up and had a heartbeat. Honestly, I think you are probably headed for a miscarriage, and I'm very sorry about that. But if it was me, I would give it a week and see what happens, if you begin to miscarry naturally or not. Then you can have another ultrasound to see if there's a baby or not, and decide then to do a D&C or continue to try a natural miscarriage. I'm so sorry about your situation--waiting and feeling unsure about things is very very hard. I hope there is a miracle in this for you, but I would also prepare yourself for what probably lies ahead.

I am so sorry but I will say this my doc told me that many women emotionally need that 2nd u/s to confirm before making a decision so if you feel that you need to do a follow up u/s in a week then please ask your doctor.

I do agree with PPs though that this isn't likely to give you a better outcome.

Thanks everyone. I'll be scheduling a second us next week, just for peace of mind. They said they couldn't(wouldn't?) Do the D&C immediately after if there are negative results, so I'll be scheduling a D&C for the day after. I'm not prepared to mc naturally physically or emotionally. Again, thank you for your time and nice thoughts. I love thebump.
