Tips or Tricks?

Hey ladies---I'm about to sound like a baby to you multiples pros on here, but I'm getting to my wits end with my back pain.  I know, I'm only 25 weeks, and I know it's going to get worse.  That's why I'm looking for help.

My doctors said my pain will definitely be worse and hit sooner because I'm only 5'0" carrying twins.  I had only gained 1 pound by 16 weeks, and Twin A had a serious growth discrepancy, so all I could do was lay down and eat.  I've gained 40 pounds since then, and I think that's why the pain has crept up.

The pain goes from the top of my back to my tailbone, and it feels like the muscles on each side of my spine are going to tear off.  I have a sit down job; which is making it worse.  I sit for 8 hours a day, and 4 hours through I'm trying to figure out how to make it through the rest of my day.  My ass (tailbone) hurts so dag on bad!

Tylenol does NOT help anymore---doesn't even take the edge off.  I'm already one modified bed rest, so I'm just going home to lay down anyways.

Did/Are any of you experience/experiencing this pain?  Have you found anything that alleviates it or makes it more bearable?  I promise I'm not trying to whine, I'm just looking for ideas.  It just seems like there's so much time left!

Re: Tips or Tricks?

  • I don't have that exact pain, yet, but I see a chiropractor now 1-2 times a week for severe nerve issues (sciatica) that make my legs fall asleep when I sit for longer than 30 minutes. It doesn't help 100% but is has helped to manage the pain a lot. I had it with my DS too and it went away when he was born.

I second a chiropractor. It helped a lot. And what about getting like a yoga ball or something to sit on instead of a desk chair? Might look a little goofy but way more comfy?
Eta- I don't know if I believe you... You looked way too cute and happy in your HDBD pics :P

OOOOHHHH a yoga ball!  I'm gonna try that when I get home and see if it helps!  I know it'll help the toosh!  LOL

Little sis can take my mind off of it for a bit ;)  Thank you @ceechie!  I'll look into a chiropractor too, @4legsRbest!  Sometimes it just feels like if I could crack it, I'd be set!

  • I had to get up and walk every hour when I was still working at my office because the chair was doing nothing but hurting my back.  Now that I'm on modified bed rest I work remote but still try to get up every 1-2 hours to just stretch and keep my back from tightening up.  I've heard that prenatal massage and acupuncture can be a huge help for back pain.  I haven't tried either recently but was going to talk to my doctor about it at my next appointment.

I'll definitely try getting up more frequently too! It's definitely the sitting that makes it so much worse! Thanks @ashb62 and @oughtonk‌!

Support band and go swimming. Sorry you're in pain. I hate to tell you mine has lingered after delivery. At 2 months pp I am still aching at the end of every day.

  • I did physical therapy through 32w when it stopped working for my back pain and was making my pelvic pain much worse. I also took warm baths and used a heating pad on low. I did use a exercise ball too. It helped the most I think. I found that by getting on my knees and putting my chest on the ball I got good relief from the pain. In one of my birthing classes they recommended having your partner push in and kind of up on either side of your hips while in that position and that helped a lot too.

I have had some prenatal massage and it does seem to help though I'm several weeks behind you at 17w. I had actually been seeing someone at this spa for a pre-pregnancy shoulder injury that causes a lot of muscle tightness and some spasm and she happens to be trained for prenatal massage also so she's switched over to a modified massage to accommodate the pregnancy and shoulder issues now. It seems to help so I'd say go for it if you can find someone and your OB is ok with it.
  • I don't have back pain, but my really bad carpal tunnel and acid reflux makes me super whiney.  So, don't feel bad about it.

I would recommend wearing really good supportive shoes. Also, is your mattress old?  You may want to think about getting a memory foam topper or something.

I had to do a lot of back and hip stretches, slept with a lot of pillows (between knees and supporting back and belly when on side), made DH massage a lot and to try avoid activity. The more activity I did the more it hurt later, at the end I couldn't do a load of laundry with out being in excrutiating pain after

Thank you so much, everyone!  I'll try to work on all of these things.  I'll do anything for some relief!  I had the day off yesterday, and my back feels much better.  Not great, but bearable!  I think it's the all day sitting.

lynnyrd80, we have a brand new mattress, and that's the only place I can sleep that seems to be firm enough.  The couch use to work but not now.  The problem with the supportive shoes is my swelling has been so bad, the doctor said I need to just wear flip flops lol  Lose-lose situation!

Rxmom04, my husband got me a prenatal massage for my birthday.  While it was great during the massage, by the time I got to my car my back was on fire again.

ajsweeton, thank you so much for those ideas.  The doctor said PT would be the next step.

zazu13, oh my goodness!  Swimming sounds amazing right now.  I'll definitely try it.  My doctor is giving me a support band so hopefully that helps too!

Thank you soooo much ladies.  I really appreciate it :)

  • @rannndi - I was in my SIL's wedding this past weekend and has crazy swelling at the rehearsal dinner on Friday night.  I had to go buy some compression socks saturday morning to wear while we were getting ready because I was worried my shoes wouldn't fit.  I also picked up a pair of Nike comfort flip flops to wear to the reception.  I'm pretty sure they will be the only shoes I wear from here on out.  They aren't the most attractive shoes, but they are so comfy and still pretty supportive compared to my reefs. https://www.amazon.com/Nike-Womens-Comfort-Thong-Sandal/dp/B004ZFIGR0

It was last weekend.  They fit, but it was a tight squeeze and I had to have two other bridesmaids help me put them on :(
