Braxton-Hicks with back pain?

I feel like an idiot. I can't freaking tell what is going on with my body lately.

I feel like I'm having a lot of BH contractions today, not really painful, just kind of uncomfortable. They are hard to time because they don't really hurt, so it's hard to tell when the start and end. It almost feels like LO is just pushing on my stomach from the inside a lot. But all of a sudden I have this constant back ache.

Is it possible that I'm only feeling contractions in my back? Or that the back ache is tied to the BH contractions at all? I had a couple of real contractions on Sunday night (intense, burning pain in my abdomen) and this doesn't feel anything like those ones.

I am half tempted to call my OB's office, but I know the first question they will ask is "how far apart" the contractions are, and for the life of me, I can't tell! I really don't feel like I'm in labour at all, except back pain seems to be a common sign ...

Re: Braxton-Hicks with back pain?

  • I've been getting back pain, but I thought it was all the weight in the front.

I get back pain with BH too. Its a lot going down there muscle wise. Unless its super unbearable or can be timed ...

    A hot bath maybe?

I feel like it is something that would be soothed by a hot bath, which makes me think it's not labour related. I just noticed I was having a lot of BH today, and I tried to time a few and then BAM back pain. The timing made me think something was happening ... but maybe today is no the day.

My husband and I are planning to go for a walk in a bit, we'll see if that changes anything. *sigh* I just want to know WTF my body is doing lately!

  • I hear you! I'm starting to read into every twinge, or absence of said twinges.

    I need UTE googles.
  • It's possible to be feeling contractions mostly in your back - usually due to baby's position.  I'd definitely see if the back pain develops any sort of pattern.

  • I get these too - I assume they are BH as my belly tightens up, but I also feel it in my back. I'm not sure either because it doesn't feel like it really "peaks", just comes on then goes away. Not much help, sorry. But you're not alone!

  • I feel the same way and this is my second baby! I can't figure out what my body is doing. I've been having contractions like crazy, but nothing in a clear enough pattern to indicate labor. Hopefully I can figure it out soon!

  • STM and this is nothing like my first.  First was clear contractions started and I was in labor.  It was all over the place at first and stabilized - this time its back pain and Braxton Hicks since Monday.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who has no idea WTF is going on with their body. Tonight I've been having what feel like possibly actual contractions... maybe? My abdomen gets all tight and at first that was all I really noticed (no pain, just the tightness for a while and then getting soft again), but I think they're starting to get more painful.

It seems like everyone says, "Oh you'll know when you're in labor." Well... what if I don't know?

Haha, I worried this too. But it's unlikely that you won't know. The first time, I'd had so many BH for so many weeks I wasn't convinced i would know. My OB assured me I would and it was absolutely obvious.

Totally feel this way. I'm absolutely on "symptom watch" and every time I'm having real, painful contractions by the time I get my timer ready they fade away. It's so frustrating - I get into "I'm going onto labour" mode and then nothing. And it's always in the middle of the night - needless to say I am not sleeping much these days!

The night I went into labour I woke up with what I thought were diarrhea cramps. After going to the bathroom 4 times and the cramps didn't go away and then became more intense I knew it was real labour. The timing is what you need to pay attention to. There is a real beginning and a real end to labour contractions. For me, they became so unbearable I knew I was either in labour or dying.
And this is why I'm terrified to go into labour. I keep flipping between "your body was meant to do this, it will be fine" to "you are such a weakling, be prepared to panic and feel like death".
