eczema

Any other little ones experiencing eczema?
I'm currently using coconut oil to moisturize once a day, limiting baths to twice a week, and have hydro cortisone for spot treatments per ped's recommendation.
My little guy 14wks today has been overall more fussy since I noticed it developing but we are dealing with lots of things at once. Finishing gs (he gained 2lbs 11oz in four weeks), 4 mo sleep regression, transitioning from rnp to bassinet, me going back to work, and first tooth (I can see the white coming but it's not through yet). He is ebf and gets pumped bottles while I work. My mom takes care of him at my house so there's not been any environmental changes. I'm so bummed bc he went from sttn to waking 2+ times every night. I'm having a hard time figuring out what I can do to help him.
My question is for anyone with experience dealing with eczema what are some signs that it's bothering lo? Any tips or tricks for handling flare ups? Specific things or foods that you avoid?
TIA

Re: eczema

  • My LO has eczema. I have been using aveeno's baby eczema lotion after her bath every night and in the morning if it's bad. I haven't noticed extra fussiness from that. There's a lot developmentally going on now, so not sure that's the reason for your LOs fussiness...unless the eczema is really bad.

I've had eczema since I was 7 and was always told not to use scented lotions, body wash, etc. and when drying off with a towel after bathing/showering to blot instead of run dry to prevent further irritation. And I always use hydrocortisone on it growing up, but unsure of when it is ok to start using that.

DD2 has eczema flare ups if I eat eggs so I cut those (in addition to other foods due to MSPI). She gets a bath daily though to soothe her skin but I won't use soap every night. I also switched her soap/lotion to Burt's Bees. For some reason, this was the only soap that DD1's skin would tolerate too.

  • My LO just developed eczema and it's super heartbreaking. She scratches at it and just feels miserable in the afternoon due to the rising warm temp. We use the aveeno eczema moisturizing cream when I notice her face flaring up and she bathes daily twice a day by pedi orders. We are approaching a herbal method by making peach leaf tea and letting DD bathe in that. My SIL researched eczema on the aveeno website and someone mentioned patting the eczema with their (baby's) urine & leaving it on for 5 mins and washing it off after. We haven't been able to try that yet, but I'm willing to try it if other moms swear by it. I have an already strict diet due to being unsure what causes DD to bleed in her poop, so I don't eat shellfish, dairy, caffeine, citrus, soy, and chocolate.

We actually went to the dr day before yesterday for skin issues. She has this along with allergies. Dr says baths every other night, but use soap only once a week. I'm to cut out dairy for two weeks. Aquaphor on her bumps and stuff, cortisone on her eczema rash, and use the aveeno eczema wash/lotion too on rest of spots.

Cerave Cerave Cerave. I am a broken record but it is legitimately the only cream that helped ODS. Aveeno made it worse, Aquaphor didn't help,
I tried like ten creams. He has eczema so bad it would crack, ooze and bleed.

Daily water only baths followed by tons of Cerave cream (not lotion) on damp skin. Apply it all over 3-4 other times per day too. Make sure you use free and clear detergent, no fabric softener etc.

DS has been battling severe eczema off and on for the past two months. It got to the point last week where he broke out of his swaddle and scratched his face so bad that it got infected and now we are on antibiotics.

Our doctor started us off on a mild steroid cream, but we had to up it to a moderate strength steroid cream. We have also been using Aveeno moisturizer for Eczema (which works on the light to moderate outbreaks), double cream lotion (did not work for us), Aveeno oatmeal bath for eczema, (helps to soothe the itching), and Epaderm (which we just went on and seems to be working very well).

On top of that, DS wears mittens almost everyday when the outbreak is severe. I managed to find mittens that stay on fairly well. I was thinking of sewing them onto my sleep n plays since they do not make size 6-9 month sleep n plays with the attached mittens.

We also are using Cetaphil for washing and my laundry detergent for sensitive skin and bio free.

I really hope that it begins to clear up soon. I feel so bad for my poor pork chop :( Huge hugs to all you other mamas who are dealing with this too!!

  • @ccip82 How was your trip! I'm sorry DS is dealing with eczema too..since your DS is wearing mittens, I have a question about them. I have DD wear her mittens too since she scratched her rash, but her mittens causes her rash to become redder. It's like lose-lose, does that happen to DS?

    @redsaffron

Trip was awesome, thanks for asking!! It was so nice seeing my family, but I am happy to be home. Iain still rubs his face when wearing the mittens and it does become red at times, but for us it is better than scratching his face with his nails. Because of the scratching, he developed a staph infection on his face :(

Are you washing everything in a sensitive skin type detergent? That might help cut down on the redness.
