Your favorite game night/rainy day games

Asking this on a whim, because there is a good chance it will rain on us this weekend(at the beach) and I want to have some alternate entertainment.  I thought it would be fun to bring some of our games we can all sit around and play.  My parents, aunt/uncle/, DH, and granny will all be in tow.  Apples to Apples is a family favorite.  So wondering two things...

1. What are your favorite game night multi-player games?

2. Would you play Cards Against Humanity with your parents/family? (I think Granny will be in bed for this one LOL)

Re: Your favorite game night/rainy day games

  • 1.  Other than Apples to Apples and CAH, I like Scattergories.  My family is also into trivia games like Trivial Pursuit, but I think some people find it boring.

    2.  I think it really depends on your family dynamic.  We play CAH with my parents all the time, and it is a blast.  My dad loved it so much we bought it for him for Christmas.  My in-laws, on the other hand?  They would be shocked, scandalized, offended, and uncomfortable.

  • I just played CAH this past weekend and I ended up having to tell my in-laws what a golden shower was, but we still enjoyed the game a lot.  I think it depends on the people playing CAH, my ILs and I are very close, so it doesn't bother me.

I LOVE jigsaw puzzles, phase 10, skipbo, and rummy 500 for family time together, UNO is always great for younger kids.  A family trip to the beach there was 12 of us playing phase 10 with 2 decks of cards, it turned out well.  I like the puzzle because eveyone can join in when they want or drop out and others can keep on going.

Mexican train- it's a dominoes game.  I know it sounds like a game for 85 year old men that hang out in parks but it's actually a lot of fun.  I also lover bezzerwizzer but I'm a nerd and love trivia, if your group isn't a trivia group I don't recommend it.  Cranium is always a good pick since it has a little bit of everything (art, word questions, trivia, charades)

We just ordered cards against humanity! It'll be in this weekend SO and I 100% intend on playing with his family!!! But we also like scattegories (that's my favorite) and pictionary. Before I was pregnant we usually played card games that involved drinking.

@MrsSparklebottom Settlers is one of our favorites too! But I agree, it would probably be too much for granny. And I would definitely not play it with my in-laws, as my MIL has some difficulty picking up new games. My dad would love it though. Everyone's mileage will vary with that game.

One of our favorites for a group is Pictionary but we get two big pads of newsprint and a set of magic markers and play it Win Lose or Draw style in teams. That always gets tons of laughs and everyone has a great time.

Scattergories is also great, or Clue or Scrabble if that's more granny's speed.

  • I love Ticket to Ride, Cranium, and Sour Apples to Apples!

I play CAH with my family all the time but like PP have said, depends on your family!
  • We love Scattegories, UNO, the card game Bullshit, Trivial Pursuit, and a good ole fashioned Monopoly tourney is always fun for us.  We have played CAH many times with my in-laws and always have a blast, however I would not dream of playing it with my parents!
  • My favorite is Taboo! We just have to watch who's on a team together, because siblings or couples together can totally dominate the game with inside references.

  • I like all the suggestions so far!

Regarding CAH... I agree with other posters, it totally depends on your family.  My family and I had a blast playing it but I had to explain to my mom and aunt what a queff, anal beads, the taint and glory hole were.  It was entertaining but awkward.  Especially when my aunt started googling all those things.  I have never laughed so hard.  :)

ugh way too many to choose from. But I love it when we break out the cards and play hearts, cribbage, or spades. Dominoes is fun as well. Actual boadgame we like buzzword or cranium
    2. Would you play Cards Against Humanity with your parents/family? (I think Granny will be in bed for this one LOL)
Apples to apples- yes CAH- borderline... maybe after a few glasses

  • I love apples to apples, Mexican train, five crowns, and my absolute favorite bohnanza ( which we've renamed "bean wars"). Seriously, check it out. It's way more fun than it sounds.

As for Cards Against Humanity....I have played with my dad and stepmom. It was Thanksgiving and lots of wine was involved. I'm not sure if I would be up to it sober! Definitely depends on the relative. I wouldn't even bring it up with my MIL. That would so so so awkward with her. We've also played with my SIL and I thought that was fine, but I could tell it bothered DH just a tad.

Have fun! I love game nights!

I like Apples to Apples, Monopoly, Scene It, Yahtzee, Bunco, Therapy, and Aggravation for bigger groups. I've never played Cards Against Humanity, but it sounds like I wouldn't like it myself from what is being said about it.

  • My family played Phase 10 and Skipbo every time we took a family vacation growing up, so those are on my list of games that I can't stand playing. But I know a lot of people like them. DH and I really like Ticket to Ride. I like Clue and Balderdash. Catch Phrase and card games don't take up a lot of space, if you don't have space while traveling for a bunch of board games.
