Allergies

Alright ladies, what do you do when the big bad allergy man strikes? I think I remember hearing that allergy meds dry up your milk so that's a no go. I also don't want this to turn into a full fledged sick disaster.

Re: Allergies

  • like PP said, it's only decongestants that you need to avoid while BFing.

many allergy medicines even have an infant/children's version, so it is clear that they are safe for kids to ingest, and the amount that actually makes it into your milk is miniscule.

i have taken singulair while BFing, after my pediatrician said it was okay. claritin, zyrtec, allegra-- all should be fine. nasal sprays are fine because they are localized.

  • It is not true that you CANT take a decongestant- there is nothing medically to be concerned about with that (like its unsafe,) the concern is that it MIGHT (is likely to,) dry up your milk. There have been women who have seen no difference. But even if you only take it for a day or two, if you find out it affects your breastfeeding, your supply should come back very soon when you stop, since it's not a medicine that stays in your system long.
