XP question about insurance and integrated screen

Hi, all. I usually post on the TTCAL board and more recently on the PgAL board. I'm excited! This is my third pregnancy. Wait, fourth counting my son, born before any of my miscarriages or surgery to fix my ute. :)

Anyway, at the first ultrasound they saw a HB (yay) which was awesome because the last few times I've gone it was all bad news... They get really quiet and turn the screen away from you. We were psyched! My question is about the integrated screen that they recommended. It's only partly covered by insurance and will cost is $1300 out of pocket because it's not considered medically necessary. I am over 35, so they recommend it. I'm not sure whether I want to do it. I was leaning toward yes, but DH made the good point that it probably won't change anything that we are doing or will do. The nurse from the office was clear that there are other reasons this is a good test... It's not about pregnancy termination, which I don't think I could consider after our loss history, but preparation. We do have the money, but saving for a baby I'm just not sure it's worth it... I am going for my checkup next Friday, so I'll ask a lot of questions then, but in the meantime I wondered if any of you have scheduled it, if it's covered by insurance, and what your rationale was for either doing it or not doing it. Is there a less expensive test that shows some of the same information, for example? I would absolutely do the test if insurance covered it, to be honest, but I'm s frustrated with insurance lately. My first d&c cost me $4000 out of pocket. What a crock!

thanks in advance for any suggestions or info you provide! FYI, I'm only 7 weeks so it's still pretty early, but I'm hoping to make it to second tri this time around!

Re: XP question about insurance and integrated screen

  • For us, the point of screening was just to be prepared in case there is anything wrong.  Does your OB offer just the NT scan?  That may be less expensive, and could give you an indication that something may be wrong and that you may want to pursue further testing with bloodwork.  The other thing I would suggest is to call your insurance and talk to someone to see what they cover.  There is newer tests (MaterniT21, Panorama, etc) that some insurance companies cover for AMA or other risk factors that might be less expensive than the quad screen for you.

This sounds similar to the test I had done, but to be honest there are so many that as a FTM I think I get them all confused.  With that being said my Dr. office called it the Harmony test.  I actually called the testing facility and spoke to a rep who offered me a paying cash discount.  So maybe that is something you could look into.  We are paying about 1/3 out of pocket and the insurance is covering nothing because "it's not necessary" according to them.

  • @bf43005‌ how much is it? This looks like it might be a good option for me. Thanks for the response.

I was told the test cost less than what you quoted, I think it was somewhere closer to $1000.  When I spoke to the testing facility I was given the cash amount of $250.  We were thrilled with that cost!
