Medication...who to ask?

I can't take this cold anymore. I would like to get some medicine (Mucinex) which isn't listed on Kellymom. Is it best to ask DD's pediatrician if it's ok to take this while BFing? Or do I ask my OB?

The best to ask about medications is the Infant Risk Line or Lactmed.

OBs and Peds tend to be overly cautious or use outdated databases.

I love talking to a real person at Infant Risk. They give really detailed information about half-lives and things like that. It's really helpful.

mucinex is fine to take while breastfeeding. i've taken it many times. (my OB even said it was fine to take while pregnant, which i also did during a couple of bad colds).

just make sure you have the plain mucinex, not the kind with the decongestant added, as decongestants can affect your supply.

So regular Mucinex won't impact supply at all? I wish I had known that two weeks ago--good to know!

mucinex shouldn't affect your supply-- i never noticed any affect on me. it's just the decongestants- since they work to dry up your secretions, they can also dry up your BM to some degree.

If call the LC at your hospital. They will look it up in the book. Or else ask the pharmacist and they can pull it up on the computer.

Thanks everyone. I am very congested. I can't clear my sinuses and now it feels like my head is going to explode and my ears are so clogged and cracking. Does anyone have a recommendation of a safe med for this?

i would take a combo of advil (to help calm down the pain/inflammation in your sinuses), and mucinex (to help thin the secretions and get them out). and drink a ton of fluids to help the mucinex do its work. hope you feel better soon!
