Someone talk me down please.

Guys, I'm freaking out a little. Although when we were in the ER after DS's febrile seizure Monday night, they concluded it was just a virus causing the fever, I'm still nervous as hell.

I had talked to an on call dr early this morning bc he had puked up a dose of meds last night and I wasnt sure how to proceed. The dr mentioned that a lot of times kids are good all day with fevers and then they spike at night. Just to continue with the meds. She said I could certainly bring him in today or follow up tomorrow depending on how he was doing.

His temp was pretty good all day, easily managed with tylenol/motrin. But now is a different story. His temp is back up to almost 102 (I just gave him motrin a few min ago). Hes also been very sleepy today, but good in between naps, and even played/ate ok today, so I decided I'd hold off on the dr and just make an appt tomorrow.

I'm just wondering how sleepy is normal when they have fevers/are ill? We're going on 4 days of fever here (which the dr didnt seem overly alarmed about), and I just dont know what I should be doing at this point. I'm an anxious mess bc I'm terrified of having a repeat episode. Does this warrant an ER visit tonight? Or should I hold off and take him into the pedi tomorrow?

Sorry I'm probably coming off needy as fuck, but I feel like I'm falling apart here.

Also @mbm1983‌ and @MabelShesABiotch‌ since I know you both have experience with febrile seizures, any tips for dealing with this fucking crippling anxiety?

  • Maybe do a lukewarm bath to bring his temp down until the Motrin kicks in if you are worried about him seizing again.

We gave him one before and it seemed to help, hes currently asleep right next to me on the couch. I put a couple cool washcloths on him to help as the motrin works its way through.

  • @‌crazycornball it was like 103.9 or something when the paramedic checked it in the ambulance.

  • *hugs* the anxiety is awful. DD had seizures a year ago and I still worry about her and watch her closely. My big thing is that I was driving myself crazy thinking about how crazy I was so when I let go of that and just let myself worry and watch over her I did a lot better.

I don't have experience with the fever side of it though. It sounds like you are doing everything right.

  • I agree with @ctgirl30 about sleeping with or near him. We bedshare anyway but I find it extra comforting when he's sick to be right near him. I can sense his body heat and know if he's spiking a temp.

  • @lovelyritametermaid they pretty much said,be diligent with tylenol/motrin around the clock, and follow up with the pedi in a few days if theres no improvement. What threw me off was how well he did today, but as soon as tonight rolled around the fever spiked again.

  • Ok, so anither question. What do I do when his temp starts spiking again but I cant give him any more meds for another hour or so (every 4 hrs for tylenol, every 6 for motrin)?

Just cool washcloths and lukewarm baths? And wait til I can give him meds?

  • Nighttime spikes are common. Our body temps typically spike this time of day and are at their highest even normally. And during sleep our bodies work internally even harder to fight the infection.

  • @CtGirl30 yeah, we've had him sleep in the PNP next to our bed all week. Maybe tonight we'll just bedshare.

  • @hawkward thanks for the suggestion. I think tomorrow I'll try to get to the store for some of the cool kids patches

  • @Chickie79‌ @peanutrach1‌ Thanks for asking. :-)

The Motrin did him well last night and he slept pretty peacefully. We also ended up give him a dose of Tylenol (suppositories, didnt want to wake him) at 10pm before we brought him to bed with us, and he slept good til about 5:30am when MH got up for work. Checked his temp and fever was back so we gave him more Motrin.

Hes still asleep in my bed. Poor guy is exhausted. I'll be taking him in to the pedi today to follow up since this has been 4 days of this god awful fever.

  • Yeah, I'm hoping he's finally kicking this fever, bc he's still asleep and his temp is still down which is great news. He's got an appt with the pedi at 11:30, so they'll be able to examine him again and see how hes doing.
