Breech Check-In

Last week there was a post about some of our babies still not being heads down, and what people were thinking of trying to help baby flip, whose baby had flipped, and any concerns that anyone had.  I had suggested a check-in in case people wanted to keep talking about it.  I figured I'd start it today, and if there is interest I'll post again next week.  If not I'll just let it drop.

I was doing one of the exercises from Spinning Babies, and at the end of last week I felt what I thought was her flipping.  All of a sudden I had more jabs up high (as opposed to just her head moving around) and I felt hiccups down low.  Yesterday I got the confirmation with an ultrasound that she had flipped.

Has anyone else had any success?  Any concerns?

I go in on the 14th for a check and if needed will have an ultrasound to check her position. I honestly can not tell what position she's in any longer. I think she's sideways from all of the pushing that happens.

I haven't done too much to try to flip her. Just trying to wait it out a little and will worry when I know I have more to worry about.

  • I'm with otter, I'm not sure what position he's in right now. I'm meeting with my midwife tomorrow, so hopefully she'll say he's flipped.

I haven't started with any of the inversions yet, and have been relying on DS1 talking to this little one down low rather than up high and playing music.

    *fingers crossed*

  • @tdonatoni, I had to look moxabustion up. Do you do it, or is it a part of your acupuncture sessions?

BTW, I always stop to look at your siggy pic whenever I see it. Love it.  :)

  • Nope, my girls are little punks. Scarlett (A) needs to be head down to attempt a vaginal delivery. After 2+ months of her being vertex she all of a sudden switched to transverse as of yesterday. My baby B Violet has remained breech for 2+ months.

Honestly I'm not attempting to turn them. I don't feel really comfortable with it and there is still time for them to flip. The hard part is that when one completely flips the other one tends to do the same. They just like their little ying yang positions I guess!

For me it's been easy to tell their positions, maybe because I have limited room in here? When they're head down I don't feel for their heads, I feel for their bony little knees. When they're breech I feel for the heads, which are usually crammed right under my ribs!

  • I am doing moxabustion, acupuncture, inversions and chiro. We used little moxie sticks and a large moxie stick. He went from footling breech (facing right) to Frank breech (facing left). We are meeting with an OB tomorrow to discuss external version. I definitely feel his head up high - he is constantly head butting my ribs.

  • I was pretty convinced the other day that LO had flipped. I started feeling his hiccups down low, when I usually feel them up higher... but then I started feeling them up higher again... so who knows! I have my regular appt tomorrow so I'm going to talk to my OB about it. Hopefully I'm right and LO did flip... One less thing to be stressed out about right?
  • Hey this is great thanks for posting. My girl is still breech. Has been the entire time I am 34 weeks today

Going for US next Thursday. If she is still breech we will schedule a c section for the week before I am due.

I personallyso not want the manual flipping. Too many negatives for us with that.

  • I'm pretty sure LO is still breech as there's been no change in the movements I feel even after chiro, yoga, and Spinning Babies exercises. My regular appointment is tomorrow, so I think my OB is re-evaluating position and fluid levels so we can make a plan moving forward.

To all the ladies with malpositioned LO's, keep us updated- did baby flip? will you be doing an ECV? c-section?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I think I may go the ECV route. If it's going to be a c-section if they try and it's not successful or they don't try at all, I'd rather try first. I have my bi-weekly appointment later on today and plan to talk to my midwife about it.

Kinda hoping the little bugger flips on his own though. :)

Sorry I didn't get a chance to come back and respond to everyone yesterday.  Life sometimes gets in the way of Bumping!  :)   It sounds like we have a pretty good group.  I'll post again next Wednesday, and we can see if anyone has had any success, or if we have anyone else join our group.  I know there's still time for babies to flip in there, but it's good to hear what everyone else is thinking!  Good luck everyone!

@cMichelle0423 - I felt exactly the same way.  There were low hiccups, but then I thought maybe high ones again, and I thought maybe her head was back up top again.  I was just confused trying to figure it out.  It was good to have an actual appointment with a doctor checking it out.

  • This is a great thread! My LO is transverse and seems to be very happy to stay that way. As of now the plan is to do an U/S next week at 37w to check fluid level, size, placenta and cord placement and if all looks good then we'll try an ECV. My OB said she wouldn't put much stock in any of the OWTs or alternative methods of turning him but we'll see.
  • My midwife thought he may be head down at my appointment today, but she wasn't sure so I'll be scheduling an ultrasound shortly. She also wants to check on his growth since I'm apparently measuring really big. Fingers crossed he's flipped!!

  • Went to my appt today and unfortunately I didn't get to see my OB... he was busy delivering a baby, so I saw his NP. I like her but I don't feel like she's as knowledgeable as she tries to be lol she said she "thinks" LO is head down. She used a doppler to hear the heartbeat and tried playing around with it all over my belly and said she mainly heard it in the lower half.... God I hope she's right. I feel somewhat relieved, but I think I'll feel better when I hear it come from my OB or an ultrasound.
  • Oh man, this thread is just what I needed, thanks for posting this.

I just found out yesterday that my little guy is breech and I have an anterior placenta. I so wasn't expecting that news. My OB said he would absolutely try to do an ECV but he gave me less than 50% chance of success due to where the placenta is and how tight my stomach is. And he's a little concerned because I am on heparin. So I think that I am opting out of the ECV.

I am trying some spinning babies stuff, but I just have this feeling he wants to stay up-I mean who can blame them really, who wants to be upside down that long, ;)

I feel bummed about it, but I know there's still a chance he'll flip, fx

Anyone else have an anterior placenta? Just curious if this could cause baby to stay breech, I forgot to ask my OB yesterday.

@Brookerose978 -  I don't have an anterior placenta this time (I had one with my daughter, but she got head down pretty early), so I don't know anything about that, but just wanted to say I'm sorry your doc didn't give you great odds.  There's still time, but it seems like you have a good attitude about it the whole thing!

@Brookerose978- I have an anterior placenta and have heard that it can make it more difficult for baby to flip towards the end of pregnancy (although I don't know that this is a fact). My doctor told me that I may not be a candidate for an ECV with an anterior placenta, but hopefully I'll find out more information at my appointment today.

Update: u/s at my appt today confirmed LO is still frank breech, and I am not a candidate for ECV with my anterior placenta. They will be scheduling a c/s for my 39th week. If baby decides to flip on his own, the c/s will get cancelled.

Thanks @MollySm‌! That is so awesome that you got your baby to flip doing the exercises, that right there gives me hope because DH and I have officially decided not to do the ECV. But, if LO decides to stay breech then I guess that's just the way he needs to be :) And while I am disappointed and scared to have a cs it really is the safest route for his grand entrance given the circumstance.
thank you for your response! I think that it makes sense that an anterior placenta could get in the way of baby flipping at this point. It was one of the reasons my OB gave me less chance of the ECV not being successful. Darn placenta. Good luck at your appointment today! Hopefully your LO has flipped already and you won't have to worry anymore, keep us posted!

Oh darn @pinkchloe-  sorry your LO didn't flip. That's the exact plan my OB has for me now as well. Are you going to try any flipping exercises? I tried a few this morning and in my mind I was like ok that sounds easy enough but they were pretty uncomfortable. I really want this baby to flip but I just have a feeling that this anterior placenta is not helping and he feels so big already for the little space left in there :( Edit- iPad is being stupid

  • @Brookerose978- I've been doing Spinning Babies exercises for over a month along with daily yoga and I've been to the chiropractor for the Webster technique. I feel good knowing I've done all I can to encourage him to flip naturally. He is apparently just very comfortable where he is!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I'm in the same boat as the rest of you ladies. My son was head down three weeks ago and then decided he was much more comfy either transverse or wedging his head directly under my ribs on my right side. The scans have shown that he is measuring long (my husband is tall, and I'm 5'3"), so I worry that he just might have more room in that position that being head down. I have my doctor's appointment on Tuesday where we'll see what position he is in. After that, I'm sure the next step is scheduling the ECV for 37 weeks (I'm currently 34w5d). I've been doing the Spinning Babies exercises and various yoga positions. I'm going to start acupuncture, Webster technique, and moxabustion all next week. I'm not sure I believe that any of them will actually help, but I want to feel like I've tried all the options.

I am 36 weeks going into 37 and my little guy decided last week to turn frank breech after being head down the whole time. The midwives felt that he might be breech but I was convinced that he wasn't and sure enough we went for the u/s yesterday and he was frank which is head up. So I have an ECV scheduled for Monday only because the dr said they have a higher success rate when it is done in he 37th week so T&P for us for a spiny baby and hope that he turns on his own and if not then that the ECV is successful :) Update: 5/12/14 My DH and I checked into the hospital this morning for our Version and I'll Admit I was nervous. They monitored our LO for 30-40min and then gave me a shot to calm my uterus since I was having some pretty good contractions on the monitor (not any that were uncomfortable) then the Dr and the resident helping her both came in and then tried turning him counter clockwise and when that wasn't working they went clockwise and viola! He's head down now! It was pretty uncomfortable and at one point I wanted to stop but they encouraged me on and before I knew it we were done. I'm glad I did it and they said that because he was so stubborn in moving that they would be VERY surprised if he turned back around. At the end of everything I was hooked back on the monitors and our LO looked great and we were sent home. I got home and was so tired that I slept for a couple hours and they encouraged that I take a long walk so I took the pup and went for a walk and all I can say post version is that I am sore but all in all it's a great feeling knowing our LO was breech but now is head down and I have hopefully avoided surgery, but if it ends up being needed I'm okay with it. As of right now I'm one happy and relieved mama :)

@Brookerose978  My baby too is breech and I have an anterior placenta. My first baby too was breech and I think thats just the way it is most comfortable in my body. I tried flipping my first baby and it was miserable and unsuccessful and caused an emergency c-section. I will be just having a c-section even though I didn't want one. Even if I wanted a version, I am sure I am not a good candidate with baby/placenta placement plus as a repeat c-section with having a scar on my uterus. Kind of bummed but learning again that nothing is in my hands....

@JmeJoLee83 I think hip dysplasia is the only concern due to their hips/legs being tucked but my doctor said she had only had one case of it in the past 15 years so I have to think its not super common....

  • Update: I did the couch inversion last night after posting and felt some movement. I didn't want to get my hopes up, but when we went to the doctor this morning, he had turned head down. Now we just have to hope he stays that way this time!
  • Thanks @joywithsugar‌! I decided against the ECV and we go in on Friday to check baby's position. My OB just didn't sound that confident about the version working, so that scared me right there. Anyway just very curious if having an anterior placenta is what is keeping him from flipping on his own. I keep hoping and trying spinning babies but maybe I'm wasting my time :-S

@JmeJoLee83 don't read dr google, lol. I did that too, it will just cause worry that you don't need right now. :)
