Preemies

Tummy trouble

My LO is 8 weeks ( 1.4 weeks adjusted). We've had a heck if a time with feeding. LO came home from nicu on fbm. After many many tries at BFing and losing my mid trying to keep up with BFing, bottle feeding and pumping I made the decision to switch to formula. 1st formula (enfamil enfacare) caused major problems for my LO. He would gag and then choke - scary! Also other reflux signs. We switched to gerber nourish then gerber gentle and although no more choking (thank God) still reflux issues and terrible gas pains. Lastly we switched to efamil ar (2weeks) and the reflux problems have lessened but LO has a terrible time passing gas.
We tried gas drops (little remedies) and that seemed to ease a but of the pain associated with passing gas but then LO began spitting up a lot more. I've just started trying gripe water and am planning to call a chiropractor about treatment as I hope to avoid meds.
Anyone else's preemie have tummy trouble? Just wondering if this is a preemie "thing"?

Re: Tummy trouble

  • I think the bad gas is a preemie thing. My twin girls started out on Neosure and it gave them lots of painful gas. We switched to Dr. Brown's bottles, made sure to feed them upright, and switched formulas to Enfamil Gentlease. They are still gassy but it doesn't seem to bother them anymore. Must be easier to pass now. You might want to call your pediatrician about the reflux thing to see if they can recommend something besides meds.

Hopping in here, not to hijack, but because I have a similar question.  DS2 is 3 weeks old, 38w GA adjusted.  He didn't have any reflux issues in the hospital, or within the first few days of being home, but in the last 2 days, he's been throwing up at least half of everything he eats.  He's still making wet diapers, but I'm concerned that he's not keeping much down.  We're BFing, and doing 2 bottle feeds/day with added Neosure and Poly Vi-Sol for extra calories and vitamins.  But we were doing these in the hospital before we came home.

I called the pedi yesterday and she said it might be a stomach virus that's going around.  But is there any other root cause I should be looking at with his preemie status?

  • The Neosure and Polyvisol make my girls spit up a bit. Even though they took them at the hospital they just stopped tolerating it one day. Throwing up large amounts isn't good though! My pediatrician said to call her and come in if my girls started throwing up.
  • Our boys are having throwing up issues too.  Dax threw up 3 times yesterday.  I called the Pedi yesterday and he asked me to bring him in today for an ultrasound.  He wanted to make sure there was no blockage.  He checked him out really good prior to ultrasound and said he looked great.  He was still gaining an ounce a day even with throwing up.  He didn't have a fever and has a wet diaper every time.  The ultrasound came back normal and the Dr gave me some tips as to how to hopefully help the vomiting.  (keep upright after feedings, add rice cereal to bottle, elevate one side of crib slightly, etc)  He said that he has seen some babies that just throw up alot.  He said if he stops having wet diapers, has a fever, or starts acting sick we need to bring him back in.

  • We tried six different formulas and finally ended up on goats milk problem solved. It has smaller molecules that are easier to digest. They make goats milk formula in the uk called nannycare. We import it via friends.
