Mary Mae was born 4/30/14 at 1:25pm, 6 pounds, 2 oz, 19.75in long.
Due to some previous surgeries, I was required to have a c/s at 39 weeks. We arrived at 10am for a noon surgery. They wanted 2 IVs, and I have always been a hard stick. They got the first IV quickly, but the second was a giant ordeal. They brought in an ultrasound and still couldn't get it (where they tried got so damaged I had trouble bending my arm for the next few days, ugh). I got so frustrated with three different people probing me for an IV that I finally started crying and had to ask them all for a break. They decided that they would put an IV in my foot after the epidural was started, so I wouldn't feel it, which was great. They did an epidural/spinal injection combination. It stung like crazy when they numbed the area, but other than that it was fine. Having the epidural was crazy, it felt like my legs were floating in water. They put in a catheter and draped me, and finally brought my DH in.
They got started on the surgery. DH and I were chatting and he was distracting me with little games, which was nice. When they started pulling to get her out, I felt a ton of pressure and it was pretty bad. After that, I passed out. I found out later that I stopped responding and breathing, and my heart rate dropped into the 30s. They gave me some medicine to bring up my heart rate, and did rescue breathing. They escorted DH out of the room, and he was completely terrified. The next thing I remember is waking up and saying "where's my baby?". Then I asked where DH was. They explained that I was out for a bit, and brought him back in. He was so relieved to see that I was ok, he was crying. Then they brought the baby over for us to see, and let me give her a kiss. After they checked her and cleaned her up a bit, they had DH help me hold her. We were even able to breastfeed in the OR while they closed me. I was so happy to have the early bonding experience I wanted so much-- I was afraid I wouldn't get that because of the surgery.
We spent three nights in the hospital and are now at home. She is just perfect, and we are doing really well. Breastfeeding is going well (once my nips toughened up-- day four was the worst), and she has already gained back her birth weight. I feel so lucky. I don't have pics on this computer, but I will post on my announcement post. I haven't posted a lot, but I've been on this board since I found out I was pregnant, and I really appreciate all of the great advice and support throughout pregnancy. You ladies are the best.
