Hi moms,
How many words is your LO saying? I was talking to my bff yesterday, we are both FTM and her daughter is 6mo older than my son. She basically thinks "that's odd" that LO is not saying anything by now. "My daughter said a few words by 11mo". At times it sounds like we get a "hi" out of him. He babbled ALL the time but nothing of understanding is coming out besides a "hi".,
Any BTDT moms out there with boys have any advice? Moms in general?

Kids talk at different ages. Just like they do everything on their own time.

KJ says Hi and Dada. We didn't count them as words until she said them on her own, without prompting, intentionally to communicate.

My doctor said around a year is when they will start forming words. Everyone is different like with crawling and walking.

He tries to say dog while chasing the dogs. But it's missing the "g" on the end. Other than that he babbles da da da da all the time. He went to the doctor Friday and she did mention we should work with him more to get him talking. Of course I will, but honestly, I'm not stressing about him not talking yet. He will eventually.

Mine hasn't said any words yet either, just babbles. He says dadadadada which DH likes to think he is saying his name. But I have to remind him that he doesn't know what he is saying. I'm not worried, I know it will come eventually.

Meh, they're still well within the normal timeframe to start talking so don't let her comments bother you. My niece was saying a few words by 10 months (she walked at 9 months, her brother at 8.5 months!). My kids are behind hers in both regards but no biggie

Quinn says "Aiduh!" for Aiden. He also says "Dah" or "Dud" but only when I ask him to say mom lol I ask him "Can you say mommy?" He shakes his head no and then says dud or Aiduh. You can see where I rank here :-p

Maybe 4 words. Mama, dada, and hi she can get most of the time. I swear she keeps saying banana, but this morning it was more "nana." My SIL said that making animal noises is easier for them to mimic right now, so we may work on that more.

DD1 was a late talker. Not to the point of it being a concern, but late by some peoples standards. So, I of course worried I was doing something wrong and my pedi told me, "Smile and nod if you must, but basically don't listen to anything anyone else has to say. They will always make you feel like you're doing something wrong or your child is somehow inferior to theirs". Best advice ever.

Mostly babbling. She says dada, baba, mama, nana, but none of it is directed at anyone specifically (she says both to DH and me). Sometimes it sounds like she says ok and yeah, but again, I don't think she really understands what she is saying. I do think that she is trying to say "dog," because she says that and points to any animal that walks on four legs.

LO is a king of nonsense babbles. We've been told by the DCPs that he sounds like he must be speaking some other language, because he's doing an awful lot of it, just not anything recognizable ;-)

My SLP (speech language pathologist) MIL gave me a book on children's speech development, and around 1 year is when the actual words start popping up, so I'm not worried yet.

One thing I realized, for us anyway, is that I don't talk a lot when it's just her and I. So I'm trying harder to carry on a dialogue with her. Also, early childhood educator SIL says that when they point and grunt they are basically asking you to define their world, so I've started labeling and talking about things she points at. Including mama and dada (and grandma, grandpa, ball, table, wall, door, outside...). And I've noticed her babbling has increased as a result.

And last but not least (never believe I don't talk much at home do ya?) if they are working on a big gross motor skill (like walking) their speech will take a back seat for a few days. When Lucy was learning to stand on her own, she stopped babbling. She was mute for like three days. So ya never know. I like @tiffletons518 advice about ignoring others

Thank you for this! I am a SAHM and its so hard to sit and chat away with a LO about what you are doing. I have tried to minimize my phone calls to other SAHM friends. I am trying to do more picture books.

I try so hard not to Dr. Google or think "something is wrong".

My LO doesn't say any real words in my opinion. He says mama, dada, nana, baba, etc., but I don't count them because I don't think he has any idea what they mean.

I think it's totally normal and nothing to worry about at all. I think around 12 months is when they should get their first word. Also, I've read that boys are a few months behind (generally) for speech, compared to girls. And it makes sense that if they are working on a physical milestone, like walking, that speech will take a back seat.

Since my daughter has been a pet rock all this time and is generally less inclined to move around and LOVES books, we read and point out objects constantly and she has picked up a few words. She says Mama (with meaning), Dada (+/- meaning), up, hot, Ohhh, Out, Off, and On. Working on her O's, apparently.

She just learned "ba" for ball, but that's it. Although just because she can't say words doesn't mean she doesn't understand them. She understands a lot of what we say, because she responds by pointing/looking at, going to the things we say, but is only just now starting to try to mimic the sounds herself.

I believe the CDC measurement of development is "1 word by 1" and "2 words (together) by 2". It's ok if your LO is not saying a bunch of words yet. Even if they are a little late one that 1 word by 1, bit.

this makes sense because my mom just told me that it's generally, walk at 1; talk by 2.

Ummmm J says nothing. Well, that's not true, he says dadadadadadada allllll the time, but I don't think he understands what it means and he doesn't say it only around my H. He started kind of mouthing bye bye while waving the other day. He also now cries when either me or my H say bye bye to him, so I think the wheels are turning and he's starting to realize what it means.

It kind of shocks me that June babies are actually talking... that's what toddlers do, not babies. None of us have toddlers yet, right? RIGHT?! J will stay a baby forever and ever.

I have a friend who has a baby born in April, and just saw her a few days ago, and her daughter doesn't say anything; just babbles mamama and dadada. C kinda just picked up some words over the last few weeks (she's a late May baby), she says "Hi" and gestures a wave, says "cat/kitty cat" and points at furry objects (we've been teaching her that for months and loves our cat), sometimes Dad and Dog, but not as much as Hi and Cat. Every baby is different.

Ds1 didn't say much and then at 2 years he started speaking in complete sentences. I worried about his language development too but our pediatrician said that kids develop at their own pace.

N doesn't say any words, although she babbles dada a lot and "hi!" to mimic you. She also doesn't point either or clap. However, she can high five and takes unassisted steps. She's 10 months old so I'm not worried. It seems she's getting gross motor skills before language.

I'm pretty confident that L says mama and dad and understands those words. He often says them as he is chasing us to get up, he says dad more consistently though. He babbles nana and yeah a lot but I'm not convinced he truly understands either (even though he kept saying Nan when my mom left the room today). He will also say what's that when he hears us say it, but that's Just mimicking.

My lo doesn't say any words. I was looking at wonder weeks app and this current sequence says something about them bring quieter. He just started babbling again in the last two days but no dada or mama yet. I can't wait to hear these words when he actually means them
