Things You Thought Were True?

Inspired by the thread over at parenting. What are somethings you thought were totally true as a kid weather it be your parents told you or someone else for that matter or you just thought of it one day and believed it?

I have two.

1. My dad told me for the longest time that my parents bought me at a little girls store and if I misbehave too badly they'll send me back and say I'm broken and ask for a better model.

2. This one is kind of embarrassing but oh well... you know how when you go to sleep and sometimes you've woken up with bug bites on your inner thighs and basically that whole section (or am I the only one...?) Anyway when I was really little I thought a bug would crawl up inside me and do "stuff" and I would end up pregnant somehow and give birth to like a new race of alien mutant bug things....I have no idea why I thought any of this.

So anybody else want to share?

My mom had me 98% convinced that she actually had an eye in the back of her head. She said if anyone tried to look at it, it would suck back into her head and get covered by hair.

My dad told me that if I ran the vacuum over the vacuum cord that I would be electrocuted. I guess he told me that just so I wouldn't do it. I told him about it later and he doesn't even remember telling me. But anyway, I never ran over the cord and was always scared if I got close. It wasn't until college until I finally figured it out. I accidentally ran over the cord and I started freaking out. Lol. I felt so dumb.

My dad's friend had a cupboard under the stairs (Harry potter style) and told us the boogie man lived there. He said if we got too close he'd bite off our nose. I used to cover my nose any time I went through that room. I found out much later that it was where he kept his hunting rifles. Genius!

My parents told me I would be arrested if I ever used curse words. I believed it until I was around 12.

My older sisters told me we had another sister named Jennifer who ran away before i was born. They told me never to bring it up to mom and dad because they would get upset. So i never did and i couldnt confirm their lies, so i believed them. I finally was like, "you guys are such mean lying jerks" when i was like 14 or 15.

So i totally pulled the same shit with my little sister to pay it forward. Good luck everyone with baby girls, they like to F with your mind!

I seriously believed that if you swallowed your gum you would never digest it so for as long as I can remember I never did in fear that it would make me fat... But for some reason I'm fat anyway.

Also no one actually told him this, but DH thought his dad was black until he was like 8 (he's not, he's just a russian jew that loves tanning). He was watching a show that had an interracial couple as parents and he said to his mom, "look, it's like our family!" Then his parents had to sit him down and figure out what the heck he was talking about. I can't imagine trying to keep a straight face as a parent for that one.

Not me, but...
In the town I grew up in there was a mini golf course that had a castle in the middle of it. My parents' friends had their kids convinced that it was Disney world until they were at least 10.

I used to hold my breath at gas stations because someone (my aunt maybe?) told me breathing in the fumes would kill all my brain cells.

I used to think there were stingrays in the bay by our beach house that came out only at night and attacked you. My older siblings told me this so that I wouldn't try to tag along for night swims with them. (I googled it, and there are actually stingrays that live in that bay. However, I have never seen any, so I'm pretty sure they live much further off the coast.)

Speaking of the beach, when we went down there for weekends when we were little, my mom and aunt used to turn the clock ahead an hour so that the kids would go to bed earlier and the adults could have more kid-free time. When we asked why it was still light outside at bedtime at the beach, they told us it was because we were closer to the equator, and we believed them.

I was convinced that leprechauns lived inside the boxes that change traffic lights on the corners of streets. It was their job to change the lights to keep everyone safe and "lucky". This was told me by my former step dad during a tantrum when I was 5. I believed it until I was 12!

I believed goblins would jump out of the toilet when I flushed. I would sprint if I actually flushed, even after I knew and I was home alone.

I remember when I was very young thinking my grandparents were inside my dad's video camera because he would always say "say hi to Mamaw and Papaw" . I would peer so hard into that lense to see if I could see them.

Oh I have another! When I was like 9 I went on a trip with my friend and her parents. Her parents were fighting and her mom said something like "he must be on his period" so for the longest time I thought guys got a period too.

when I was about 5 years old, my cousin who was 4 years older than me lived with us for 6 months or so. She loooved scary stories and used to force me to listen to them. I was convinced that after midnight and until the sun comes up, the bathroom was filled with ghosts and water turned into blood. Not like friendly ghosts, but like bleeding head floating in the toilet and all. My parents couldn't figure out why I started wetting the bed all of a sudden at 5 years old but I literally couldn't go to the bathroom in the middle of the night! I still have weird fear of the bathroom in the middle of the night. While I was pregnant, I had to leave the light on in the bathroom all night so that I could go to the bathroom without having wake my husband up 5 times in the night.

My brother told me if you wore socks to bed, you would overheat and die. I still can't do that...

My sister used to believe she was the oldest in our family because her birthday is first in the year.

Used to believe that broccoli was just tiny little trees and I was afraid I would find tiny little squirrels in there.

After watching the movie "Goonies" as a kid, I believed that men's testicals were on top of their "pee pee" not on the bottom (because of the broken statue scene!). I believed that for a long time....till like, high school sex ed.
