Intro, out-of-state IVF ? (warning: DD ticker)

Hi Ladies,

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all, and am hoping you can help me through the IVF process. I am a bump veteran - I've been using The Knot/Nest?Bump since 2003. :) Here is my story (short story in siggy):
DH and I TTC'd for 3 years, and I suffered 2 m/c's in 2009, then a C/P in 2010. We were referred to an RE to get genetic testing done, and found out that DH has a balanced translocation. While getting financially set to do IVF (we have no fertility coverage), I suffered 3 more CP's. We were getting set up to do our 1st round of IVF in January 2012 when I found out that I was PG in December of 2011. In August 2012, my DD was born. We have been TTC #2 for over a year now, and I've had 2 more CP's and 1 ectopic, so we are TTA and moving onto IVF this summer.

Due to no fertility coverage, I am starting to look into doing IVF out of state (NC and SC) where we have family, and it is significantly cheaper for us. We live in NJ so it is pretty far away. Has anyone traveled that far out-of-state to do IVF? If so, how does it work? Are you able to do testing locally, and then do the retrieval and transfer at the other facility? Any insight into this would be great.

TIA.

  • Hi, welcome. I'm confused, why exactly are you looking out of state for IVF? Honestly the only way I can see this being feasible is if you are planning on relocating there during your cycle? Unless you can do all your monitoring in NJ, and just go out to NC (or wherever) for retrieval / transfer? But if you're going to be OOP anyway, why not just go to an IVF clinic in NJ? Or is it just exponentially cheaper to do it in NC? I mean obviously if that's the case, where you'd be saving thousands, I'd say the only way it's worth all the aggravation and hassle is if they will let you do all your monitoring here, so you don't end up having to stay in another state for an entire cycle, ykwim?

Good luck, sorry about your losses.

  • ACK - duh. Yes, in NJ it is much more expensive to do IVF than down south (like $10k more). Sorry, should have mentioned that huge detail.

Sure, I kind of figured that was it, otherwise why would anyone want to go through that enormous hassle. Like I said, can you see if it's possible to monitor out in NJ and just do retrieval/ transfer out there? Is it possible to relocate out there for an entire cycle?

IVF is a big deal, there's a ton of monitoring involved, having gone through this twice, the idea of having to do it in another state, outside of my comfort zone, sounds like a freaking nightmare! Just thinking about all those shots, retrieval, transfer, and having the giant task of trying to keep your stress level at a minimum would seem nearly impossible, when you throw in the fact that you have to actually go to another state to get it all done and you're already parenting a toddler! I would be like this  ~X( but I was like that through my entire first cycle, with my clinic 2 mins away LOL

There's so many stupid little factors than can blow an entire cycle, you know? Personally I'd probably put up the extra $$ for the sake of knowing my clinic is local, so you can just hope that if any issues come up, you can address them promptly, you know?

I wish I  had something good to say about this idea, but I just can't think of any amount of money that would be worth all the aggravation / stress this would cause me!

  • NJ is a mandate state. Do neither of you work in NJ? I would go so far as to get a new job in the state you live in, for the IF insurance coverage, rather than relocate with a toddler for the month it takes to cycle (plus, God forbid a BFN then you have to go back down south to do a FET).

  • I'm also in NJ, and my insurance covers the bloodwork, ultrasound monitoring, and RE visits.  My clinic works with you to push through what they can for insurance.  With my first IVF cycle many of the meds and the actual retrieval and transfer were not covered.  So it was still expensive, but they seriously work with you.  Not sure where you go, but here is the link to my clinic in case you want to consult with them.  https://www.startfertility.com/

DH works in NY, and I work from home in NJ, but my company is in CA, and we have no fertility coverage through work.

Ugh! Sucks! I agree with the PP, is there anyway you could find a job based in NJ? Or is that not even an option for you? Maybe your H?  I mean long term, wouldn't it be more beneficial to have the coverage, than to have to do an OOP cycle? Especially since there's no guarantee IVF will work at all. I've gone through 2 failed cycles, there are people on the board that have gone through 5 or more failed cycles.

  • I agree about trying to find a job in NJ.  But I do follow a blog that has done an out of state IVF cycle.  They just did another IVF with their home cycle but their last frozen was out of state.  I'm sure if you comment she's be happy to talk logistics.  https://laughterthroughtearsblog.com/
