Natural Birth

Hello all!

I've lurked off and on for a while now just because natural birth has always intrigued me since it's a route I've always hoped to take. So I figured I'd come out of lurkdom to join in the discussion, starting with an introduction! I'm 24yo and DH is 25yo and I'm about 10 weeks pregnant with our first child. I have just signed us up for a Mongan Method hypnobirthing class offered through my hospital (once a week for five weeks, 2.5 hours each class) to take in my 7th month. However, I'm unsure if personally feel like five weeks is enough. Are there any suggestions that I should do, such as books to read etc, in the meantime? I'm hoping to take some prenatal yoga classes as well as a body interval workout class offered through my hospital. I'm hoping to be able to obtain the mindset necessary in order to accomplish a natural birth. I look forward to reading more and participating on this board, if you'll have me!

    Welcome!  Glad you found us!

I did Hypnobirthing and had a great experience both times!  The key with this method is practice, just attending the classes would not have been enough for me.  You should receive the book and Rainbow Relaxation CD as part of the class.  You might see if you can get it earlier so you can start listening to the CD and reading the book before the classes start, that's what I did.  If they won't give you the materials ahead of time you could always check the library for the book.

As far as other things, I think the book, "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" is a great read.  The first half is filled with the most beautiful, inspirational stories and the second half has more practical information.  I also like the Hypnobirthing CD Comfort Zone, I used this CD for the entire time I was in labor with both my babies.  It's music recorded in a hypnotic rhythm, it's the same music as you will find on Rainbow Relaxation, but there is no talking.

Really try to surround yourself with positive people, who will be supportive.  This is important for anyone planning a med-free birth, but in particular Hypno Mamas.  The program really focuses on having a positive attitude and eliminating emotionally charged words from your thoughts and conversations.  I would suggest not discussing your plans with anyone who will not be supportive.

welcome aboard. It sounds like you have plenty of way to prepare yourself but if you want more check out Ina mae gaskin's guide to child birth and try reading others positive naturl birth staories. It really helped me to know other women had been through tough moments and made it.

  • Thank you for the thoughtful replies! I just found Ina's book on Amazon, so I'll definitely be ordering it. Asking for the class materials ahead of time sounds like a great idea. And thanks for the CD suggestions! Hopefully I find one that fits :)

  • Welcome! I agree with everyone else. A book I fond helpful was "A thinking woman's guide to a better birth" by Henci Goer. It talks about hosital interventions and the pros vs cons of each. I found it really helpful as I had an OB at the hospital. I took the Bradley classes and they focus of exercises and staying in shape. They stress walking, doing squats and butterflies to help stay tones and prepare your body for birth.
