One & Done: Only child

Having a kid is like...

So, in my (seemingly) never ending process of trying to figure out if we're going to have another kid, an analogy came to me today:

Having a kid is like my college experience.  Ridiculously expensive (high five digit student loans!), extraordinarily stressful, plenty of feelings of failure, many many sleepless nights, caused me to lose some family members, and permanent scars (or injuries).  But it also taught me so much, had lots of extremely fun moments, brought me new friends, and made my life better in pretty much every way.

So, what past experience would you compare having a kid to?

  • I would say riding a roller coaster.

There is a long wait, then that moment when you finally board, but your not 100% sure you still want to ride, but they have already locked in your seat belt. Then you have that hill to climb getting all your anxiety up (pregnancy). Then you make that first drop and you completely loose control. At times your excited, happy, scared, sick, worried, ect all in one, but you know there is no way to stop it now. Then when you finally have things half ass under control and you reach the end..... you struggle to make the decision of rather you want to get back on or go an enjoy the rest of the park.

Enjoy the rest of the park!!!!

  • Wait-- how come both college and parenting has made you lose family members?

Honestly, I can't think of anything I can compare it to.  I want to have words for it, but I am still feeling like a lot of times I am still getting my bearings.  The only thing I can say with certainty is that it's so so so much harder than I ever imagined.

I like your analogy, but I didn't have a typical college experience, so it doesn't quite fit for me.

Yes, I would say that for me, sleeping around and drinking every night doesn't quite fit for me either.

Then you stand around, dizzy and nauseous when you get off the ride? :P
No, but really, I like this analogy.

Well, I wouldn't say that parenting has made me lose family members, but college did.  It was the start of the end of my relationship with my dad.  I'm not saying it was the wrong thing, but it was a thing.

I like this analogy until I remember I went back for grad school...
