What Helps you Sleep?

So as of lately I am finding it impossible to fall asleep, I've done some research and have tried a ton of different things but am still spending hours tossing and turning.  What have you ladies done that's helpful for getting some sleep at night?

I have a snoogle pillow so comfort hasn't been to much of an issue, I play relaxing music, and normally cap of my night with a glass of milk.  Recently I have also been fighting with RLS so I'm sure that's attributing to my insomnia; for those of you that have had RLS what advice to you have to help it pass?

Any advice would be great and thanks in advanced for sharing your secrets for shut eye.

Re: What Helps you Sleep?

  • I've been approved to take Benadryl for sleep by my MFM... It's the only way I can get a couple hours of sleep. It doesn't make me drowsy in the morning but simply makes me fall asleep easier.

  • I don't have difficulty falling asleep but wake up in the middle of the night WIDE awake and have difficulty going back to sleep. I listen to meditation podcasts to try to lull myself back to sleep. If that doesn't work, I get up and read (rather than watch TV which can wake you up) until I feel sleepy again and then get back into bed. My midwife suggested that I try eating something as sometimes even if we don't feel hungry its our body telling us to eat something. Also, I have several homeopathic remedies that were just recommended to me. I take 2 Calms Forte pills before bed along with a passionflower tincture, both of which I can take again when I wake up. Finally, my chiropractor recommended eating something with protein (hard boiled egg? string cheese?) right before bed just in case it is hunger that is waking me up.

Good luck (to all of us)!

Unisom. Every night. The few nights I have taken off, I fall asleep quickly but once I wake up I cannot get back to sleep and it's awful. Melatonin + unisom have helped tremendously.

Getting activity daily I think is key for good sleep - even if that's a short walk or some light yoga.  I don't have RLS but I've heard from friends that magnesium supplements are a big help.
  • Rescue Sleep - safe herbal supplement spray recommended by my CBE.  Available at apothecary pharmacies and Whole Foods.  It works great for when you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep because of a busy mind.

Unfortunately I'm on bed rest so daily activity is a restriction, no walks, yoga or exercise for me.  When I actually think about it the major sleeping issues started about the time I got put on bed rest (2 1/2 weeks ago).  I may have to look into magnesium for the RLS.

I tried Benadryl last night! Best nights sleep I've had in a while. My doc had already approved it for my seasonal allergies. I feel like a different person today!

I wish! Bed rest doesn't let me do that either and my sex drive has been crazy!

Regular exercise helps me with my RLS. Mine also gets much worse during LO's growth spurts, so I make sure to increase my calcium and magnesium supplements and make sure I'm drinking more water and getting more potassium in my diet.

  • My ob said it was safe to take Tylenol pm, so I take it whenever I really can't sleep.
  • My dr said to try Tylenol PM just got some yesterday. He also said I could try melatonin. Ha might try melatonin at some point since I might be putting my cat on it since he puts his track shoes on at around 1-2 am. Between that and peeing OMG!!!

I am 38 weeks and it is getting harder and harder to sleep. I can't get comfortable and turning is such an effort! I use many pillows :)

Sadly, I am finding that after a few nights of restless sleep, I finally have a good night. Naps have become my friend!
