I put the starving reply, but in my head that is starving third world child where formula etc is not an option, NOT my baby is hungry and won't sleep through.... Felt I needed to clarify since no one else ticked that! In my situation - HELL NO!!
I don't know the specific reason, but I suspect it was because of one or more of the following reasons;
A) the parents also have kids that are 18-25 years old, and that was what was recommended at the time they want to feel that their 'later in life' baby is more advanced C) they have an older doctor who recommended early foods D) formula is too expensive so they started purees. (She has been asking people for formula coupons - any kind - Similac, Enfamil...)
I haven't asked them directly, as they are not my friends, but rather a friend of a friend. My friend asked me what was suggested these days because even she thought it was too early.
I have a friend who was told by everyone (not me and not the pediatrician) that she should start foods at 2 mths because her son wasn't sleeping through the night. I was appalled! Why would you do that!?!

I was always told if your LO sleeps through the night at 2 months consider yourself lucky. I've never been told that it's the NORM and you should take drastic measures to make it happen.

As someone with kids that in that age group, it wasn't recommended then either.
Talked to my pedi about introducing solids at Levi's 2 month checkup yesterday... He said he doesn't understand why parents are so obsessed with started their babies on solids as soon as possible. He said we can introduce 1 food at a time starting at 4 months, but that there's really no point until 6 months.
My oldest is 17 and the pedi didn't recommend solids until 4-6mos, and even then I think it was just rice cereal. With LO we're EBF so 6mos is what was suggested. Solid food diapers are way nastier, why not just wait?
I'm somewhere between "hell no" and "yes, if pedi advised it." I voted the latter. Pedi would have to give me a good reason why. I'm not sure of any but I'd be open to hearing it.
A good friend of mine posted a video on Facebook recently of feeding her son solids for the first time. He turned 4 months on April 5 so he was about 4.5 months...
@dannie2011 Obviously not all doctors are on the same bandwagon, but when I had DD my pedi recommended cereal at 4 months and purees at 5 to 6 months. (DD is 12 now)
@bunnyfungo We did BLW with DS1 and started at 6.5 months. MIL was chomping at the bit because she wanted to feed him and we 'stole' that from her. (No purée, no bottles, then straight to feeding himself )
@anyone... My doc now says we 'can' start cereal at 4 to 5 months if we 'want' to. But he didn't actually recommend. We plan to do BLW starting sometime after 6 months again.
And @akflutterby, you're absolutely correct...solid food diapers are MUCH nastier!!! ^^ I advise everybody to wait!!!!!!

Lol. I figure, since I frequently prepare food and eat with LO in my arms, there's a good chance 'something' has transferred from my hands to my breast...or at least been on my hands when I've detached LO from my breast. I'm not too concerned about LO getting a 'taste' of stuff. Breast milk changes flavour dependent on what is consumed.
I started my twins on rice cereal at 4.5 months and then moved through the different grains and didn't start veggies until 6 months. This was what their pedi recommended
Hellz no. Not only is it completely unnecessary nutrition-wise, it's just more work for the parents! Extra dishes, extra laundry, extra time...why rush into that? The cuteness and fun wears off pretty quick and then it's just something extra in your routine.
I started both of my bigs on solids at 6 months, but DD was super disinterested and really didn't start eating hers regularly until 8-9 months.

I just wanted to reference it, since recommendations on various aspects of child development etc. change over the years.
Someone 20 years old would likely have seen/heard of different ways to treat newborns than 40 years old.
For example: my mother (70-ish) was taught to put pablum in baby bottles from birth (2 weeks at the latest). I was taught to not add anything to a bottle. People my parents' age started cereal at 2 weeks to a month...I started my oldest at 4 months.

However, I've seen tons of people do crazy ill-advised things with their babies, and despite all that, the babies thrive.
