Reflux (Sorry if this is an over-discussed topic)

I haven't been on TB much since baby was born but I have an issue I am looking for answers to. Anyone have a baby that had/has reflux? Charlie spits like its his full time job, but rarely does he seem upsetted by it. He just constantly spits, sometimes very large amounts. Dr. Has me on a diet free of dairy, eggs, fish, and nuts trying to determine if its an allergy. I've been doing it since Friday and the only difference we be seen is his eczema has pretty much cleared up, oy had not helped the spitting. Dr. Said I need to be on the diet for 48 hours for all the stuff to be out of my system, the internet seems to think 2-3 weeks. Any ideas? Suggestions? Experiences? Help!

Re: Reflux (Sorry if this is an over-discussed topic)

  • DD has reflux and spits up a TON.  I think reflux is stomach acid so if it were reflux it would be burning his throat/nose/etc.  It took about 3 weeks on reflux medicine to see a difference with DD.

  • Yes, he is a "happy spitter" with a frustrated mama, daddy and sitter!  :(  So much laundry, such a mess, and I just feel bad for him!
  • I burp LO a ton and I stopped giving the vitamin d drops (will resume at 4 months) and I've seen an improvement. After a feed I put him in his bouncer or hold him upright. We also put his cosleeper at an incline and that has helped

My LO shows no signs of discomfort and actually barely spits up but the LC said he has reflux. I guess it's "silent" reflux. Where is your LO sleeping? Sleeping in a rock n play helps a lot.

  • My LO has reflux and spits up a lot but also screams bloody murder in pain. She also gets the hiccups a lot. She's on meds now so no more screaming. I have to burp her well and keep her upright after feedings. It also helps to elevate the head of their crib. She doesn't sleep lying flat anymore which helps also.

  • Since the spitting up isn't really bothering him and you are eliminating foods it may just take time. Reflux doesn't always cause pain, and meds don't stop the spitting up. Now for dairy it will take longer then 48 hours to be out of your system, you might notice some improvement earlier but it's more like what you read on the net 2-3 weeks. Most Doctors tell you to avoid dairy and soy. Never heard of fish eggs and nuts at this stage. Check out the breastfeeding board they have a thread for moms who are dealing with allergies. I think the thread is called MSPI moms.

Do the vitamin D drops cause reflux? Did you guess this or did someone tell you this? Also, why will you resume at 4 months specifically? Just wondering bc my LO seems to have reflux.
I was reading a natural blog (can't remember though which one) and it went through all these issues that could be causing reflux and I had tried everything and was desperate. It mentioned that some babies are more sensitive to vitamins and to stop the drops to see if it was the cause. My entire family has a history of stomach sensitivity so I thought I would just try it for a week and it seemed to help. Can't be sure if it's a combo of everything though.

I am planning to start them again at 4 months just to see if he can handle it then. He's 9 wks right now. I live in a sunny place so I don't think it's doing much damage to start them late. I hope not anyway! I plan to order the Carlson ones now. I was doing the enfamil before.
