Refusing formula

Hi ladies ! I have been a bit " quiet "
The past few month . DD just keeps me very busy , so I was not really socialising lately. Plus I have more kids . But I wanna get back to "normal" now that she is nearly 4 month old. Anyway DD still wakes up at night for feeds. Up to 3x. I am very exhausted. She is also a bit skinny. That's why I tried to introduce formula before bed time. I am only Breastfeeding so far. But DD refuses to take it. DH tried to give her the bottle ... But nothing . Not a chance . We have tried now for a week. Any ideas what else we can do to convince her ??

Re: Refusing formula

  • I have a question -- are you ever feeding her pumped breast milk via a bottle? Because if you haven't done that, it's possible that she's refusing the bottle, not the formula itself. And that would require a different strategy.

If you have been giving her bottles of expressed breast milk, I'd probably try adding a little bit of formula to that rather than just straight up giving formula. As she gets used to it, you could increase the amount of formula and decrease the amount of breast milk gradually.

The other thing to consider is the fact that being exclusively breast fed does not necessarily mean a baby won't sleep through the night. And conversely, formula won't guarantee more sleep. It might work, sure, but there is also the possibility that she just really still needs those MOTN feedings. Or isn't a good sleeper yet. My EBF son started sleeping through the night at 6.5 weeks. My SIL's son is 2+ months and FF and only sleeps in 3-4 hour stretches at most. Every baby is different and it's a bit of a crapshoot.

  • I completely agree with everything peanutmuse said. Also, we give my babies 2 oz of formula everyday to give them their vitamins and meds and my daughter flat out refused it for awhile I was really confused until I realized that it started when we switched brands. We switched back and she was happy to drink it again. So if it's not the bottle she hates, it could be that she would like a different type of formula more.

  • @peanutmuse gave thorough and excellent advice to cover all the bases.

Thanks ladies for your advise ! She has never had a bottle before. I just thought formula may give her a fuller tummy. But you claim , that may not be the case . At least we get a reall long maternity leave were I live . So I have the luxury to go back to sleep, once the other kids have left for school . Mar Bee you must be sooooo exhausted . Goodness me 4x a night
  • Yeah, I had a feeling that maybe you had never offered her a bottle. You have to address that part first, IMO.

Yeah it's also an "art" to find the bottle they like !! The funniest is, that last night she woke up only once .. So maybe she is just starting to become a better sleeper???

I hope so, for your sake, but you probably shouldn't count on that! ;)
  • I've had luck with feeding DS before I go to bed. It didn't work with my oldest but with this LO, it does save me one night waking. I just pick him up and pop him on around 10:30 or so.
