Pregnant after a Loss

Wearing Spanx for a wedding

Good afternoon, ladies!

So I'm wondering...how many of you have/would wear Spanx or shapewear to a special event, like a wedding? I have only one wedding to attend this summer, on June 14th. I will be almost 21 weeks at that point. I had purchased a really cute summery dress several months ago with this wedding in mind, but last time I tried it on, I was unhappy with my appearance due to my "blump". I haven't tried it on in a few weeks, and since then my bloating has gone down a bit, but my once flat tummy is still MIA! Since I'm a FTM with a tilted ute, my doc told me not to be surprised if a noticeable (real) bump doesn't appear until I'm nearly to the mid-20's in terms of weeks. So that being said... do you think I could wear Spanx to hold in the blump when I'm that far along? Or is it somehow dangerous? I did Google this question and came up with results that said it was safe, but will likely be pretty uncomfortable for me.

Just curious what you guys would do in my shoes! I really don't want to have to find a different dress. :-/

It sounds like something you may have to decide closer to the event. There is so much discomfort already from being pregnant that I think I'd rather not deal with another uncomfortable thing, even if it meant wearing a different dress. I also have no idea if it could be harmful or not. They do make maternity spanx, don't they?

  • If it was me I'd just embrace the bump even if it's a blump. No one will know.

Or, you might be able to wear something that's not as tight as Spanx but still smooths you out depending on how things go. I don't think I'd have been able to fit in the dress you have at 21 weeks, but you'll just have to play that part by ear.
I bought some maternity shapewear from a company named Belevation (they are available on Amazon).  They do make maternity Spanx, but Belevation had better reviews on Amazon so I gave them a shot.  I have regular Spanx which I have worn many times to smooth things out pre-pregnancy, but they are SUPER constricting and I agree with PP that they might be uncomfortable for you (though I don't think they'd HURT anything as far as the baby is concerned -- they are pretty well protected in there).

Anyway, I love the Belevation shapewear!  They are comfortable, not as constrictive as Spanx (or as hot).  That said, they have a panel that is designed to support the belly, which means it also emphasizes it.  I like that because it smoothes out my B-bump, but it might not be compatible with the shape of your dress since it has such a defined waist.

Dear God, Since I couldn't hold my little one in my lap and tell him about you, could you hold him in your lap and tell him about me?

  • I got the maternity spanx and another brand (sorry don't remember the brand)  They are very comfortable.  They also have the added bonus of holding your tummy up. This makes your bump look more li Last time when I was pregnant with twins I wore one of those supportive belts to help with my heavy tummy.  These spanx were MORE supportive and less itchy.  I plan to wear them more as my tummy grows.

At 21 weeks, your baby is going to be over 10 inches long. I would look at finding a different dress instead of wearing one that would require you to try and make yourself look like you are not pregnant.

  • Thanks for the input everyone. I've ordered a different dress. I just don't think I'll be able to look not-pregnant or not-bloated, and that dress looks best with a svelte figure. It would have been a losing battle. Oh well! New dress is pretty too, and nice and flowy and summery so more comfortable anyway. And no Spanx needed! ;)

Now whether to return Dress #1 or save it for post-pregnancy...
