New mom - LO sleeping advice needed

Hi ladies,

New mom here of a 5 day old lo. We have a cosleeper by our bed but we have the sides up because of a height difference with our bed. I know this is a safe place for him to sleep but my husband and I are PeTRiFiED to leave him when he sleeps. We are taking turns with him now and it's exhausting. He can already roll on his side and he is too small for a swaddle me. We swaddle him with muslin blankets but he gets out. I'm so scared he will suffocate. I am looking for some advice or encouragement to feel better about letting him sleep there so we can get some sleep too! Thanks!

  • A few thoughts:

    *Snuza/AngelCare monitor
*Your swaddles are probably too loose if a five day old is busting out.
*There are velcro swaddlers that are newborn sized. Not sure about the swaddle me, but there are other options.

  • I've heard of a rock n play but I don't know much about them. Are they safe for newborns to sleep in? Does it rock on its own?
  • And what model angelcare would you recommend? Just the movement one since he will be at our bedside?
  • Try the super swaddle. Instructions are on youtube.

DS sleeps in a swaddle-me in the RNP with a Snuza Go. Each item worth every penny for the peace of mind and sleep.

  • The ladies here have given some good suggestions for tools to try. In terms of encouragement, I think everyone worries about this to some extent. At some point with our first baby, MH and I realized that our son was at greater danger with us when we were all exhausted. We are more likely to drop him, for example, when we haven't slept. So at some point you just have to trust that he'll be okay and get some sleep when he sleeps. All of you will be safer and happier when you are somewhat rested.

  • I really appreciate all of the advice. We are going to babies r us to look at some other sleeping options for him like the rock n play. He's just so little and precious I can't help but worry. Again though thank you for the encouraging words :)
  • They make swaddles that are like sleeping bags, with zippers, that baby can't bust out of. That might be worth looking at as well. There's the Ergobaby Cocoon and Mod Swad, just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are others too.

    Good luck!

  • We use the halo sleep sack swaddle. It comes in newborn size. We also have a RnP and while we don't use it for nighttime, it's great.

All of this except we are using the Aden & Anais sleep sack. Our DD HATES being swaddled - she likes those arms and hands free. Swaddled = screaming. So we keep her in a onesie or a gown and pull the mittens up over her hands so she can't scratch herself and she's still warm in the sleep sack.

She loves the RnP but like PP we don't use it at night. She sleeps in the bassinet attachment of the pack n' play next to our bed. It also has a slight incline she she sleeps well in it.

Our 7 day old was in the PNP bassinet but because of possible reflux issues I started the rock n play at bed time.

He sleeps elevated and much better. He's actually a great sleeper compared to brother going 3 hour stretches and making 4-4.5 stretches EBF.

I wish the RNP had a little more height to be equal with our bed so I wouldn't have to keep leaning over with the soreness from delivery but the rock n play has saved us many times now with both kids!
