TTC After a Loss

AW: made RE appt

We have our first consult with an RE a week from tomorrow! I am feeling such a mix of emotions-- part of me is wallowing in self pity and having a hard time accepting that this is where our process has led us. But the part of me that picked up the phone to make the appointment is looking forward to someone (hopefully) knowing more about RPL and taking our concerns seriously. Even though I'm still bleeding from my D&C last week, making the appointment makes me feel like we're doing something to start the process of getting more information and figuring out our options. I'm nervous about the appointment, so any words of advice or thoughts about what to expect from a first RE appointment are welcomed!

In other news, a few days ago I finally finished my course of post-op Flagyl that the doctor prescribed (I couldn't have any alcohol while taking it-- snap!). Tonight I plan on pouring myself a big glass of wine.

Re: AW: made RE appt

  • ((HUGS)) I wish I live close by so we could have a huge glass on wine together!!  I felt/feel EXACTLY the same way that you do about the RE appointment.  I am so glad that I decided to see an RE and get more serious testing done.  Even though I am happy that I now know that there is something "not normal" with my body, it was really hard to hear.  I don't regret going because now I have a team of doctors and nurses in place who are going to help me through this part of my journey.

If you want to talk more send me a PM.  I'm here for you!!!

I'm so sorry your journey has lead you here; but I completly understand being torn of miserable/excited feelings for seeing an RE.

As for the first appt it's a lot of history. My RE did a u/s and bw on mh and I. If you get your history from your ob to bring with you that would be helpful. Make sure YH is with you. Start writing a list of questions you have and don't be afraid to take notes.

I am so sorry that the road led you here but glad you made the appointment and will get some answers. The initial consultation (at least for me) was a lot of information gathering and talking about all the RPL testing he wanted to do. He also did an ultrasound, but I am not sure if that is standard. Best of luck to you.

Everything @tvlily said. I also had to go back for more tests once AF came on certain CDs. You might want to warn YH that in addition to bloodwork he may have to make a uh contribution. MH thought I was kidding and was a bit thrown when they asked if he wanted a take home cup or to do it right then! I'm sorry this journey has brought you to this point but taking the first step is huge. My other word of advice is be prepared there is still a possibility that after all the tests they may have no answer. But the RE will still have a plan to help you as best they can (that's the boat I'm in) GL!

  • ((Hugs)) I'm glad you took the step and made an appointment.
At our first appointment, she basically took a good history, did a physical and ultrasound and took blood work (including insulin level to see if I have PCOS, FSH, LH, thyroid studies, progesterone, etc)
She also asked if we wanted to do genetic screening, and gave us the option of 'basic' genetic screening and the 'sequencing' (more detailed). I didn't want to do this at first, but am really glad I did, especially since I found out I am a carrier for not only one, but three pretty bad genetic diseases (luckily, DH is not, so the worst that can happen, is that there's 50% chance our child will be a carrier as well).
She also gave us two HUGE folders of information : where to get cheap drugs, how to do self-injections, resources for accupuncture / massage therapy, etc etc
Then she went through all the different options that we had (IVF, IUI, clomid, femara, follistim, etc)
Anyways, I'm really glad that I'm seeing a RE, but my advice would be 1. write down everything you want to ask beforehand because it can get pretty overwhelming in there and 2. don't let your RE push you one way or another...as I've learned over going to my RE, this is really not a science, and you should do as much or as little as you're comfortable doing .

    GOOD LUCK!
