Water in Sippy Cup

FTM here. I was told to begin water in a Sippy cup around 6 months. At Walmart yesterday I seen this Sippy cup on sale so I grabbed it for the future but it says 4months+ I'm in no rush but am curious when the STM's introduced water in a Sippy cup and how much. Is there any harm to introducing it too early?

I generally do not think doctors engage water before 6 months. I think it is because it can interfere with LO's ability to absorb nutrients from breast milk and/or formula. Also, it can make a baby feel full when in reality it's not.

With DD we introduced water in a sippy a little after 6 months. I had to experiment with several different brands until I found one that she liked best!

  • I will introduce a sippy cup soon- but not with water, with bm (with my ds I did formula).
  • My LO got a cup from Easter bunny and now has two, she just turned 4 months last week. I usually only give maybe 1/2 oz and mostly when she gets the hiccups. She really just chews on them.
  • I will intro a straw cup around 6mo. I would rec trying that first. They are better than sippies for their dental development. My ODS took to the straw no problem.

  • I really didn't start a sippy until they were consistently eating table food. We did BLW so once she was actually eating the food we would give a sippy with breast milk at meal times. They never really got much from it but it was a way to practice. I'd say we used sippy's consistently at meal times around 7-8 months. At a year our daycare (at the time) transitioned from bottles to sippy's and my dd made the switch easily. I think my first was done with bottles around 13-14 months. I guess I'm not really into a rush to introduce sippy cups.

My plan is to get a straw cup as well! At my mommy & me group they suggest to use both kinda of Sippy cups as each encourages a different type of sucking and promotors development in difference areas (prevents choking, speech development, teeth etc).

Thanks everyone for your input and advice!
