IF Question

I am not sure if any ladies on here might have experience but this is the only board I am comfortable posting on, so I thought I would reach out. Basically, my brother and SIL have been ttc for almost two years with no success. My brother told me they have decided to pursue testing. However, he also mentioned that the doctor has already given my SIL a "drug" (he couldn't remember the name) to help her ovulate. She is not seeing an RE. I have a feeling the drug in question is Clomid (he said the name sounded familiar). From my days on TTGP, I know that is serious stuff. I am pretty confident neither one has had any testing yet. I am genuinely concerned but I do not want to overstep any bounds. Should I say anything or just hope that her doctor is doing everything (monitoring, testing, etc)? Also, in general, how can I be supportive of them during this time? Thanks!

I would just say you are there to support them no matter what. I know a lot of doctor's offices are starting to have a few specialitists in their ranks. My doctor's office has a few different ones including an endocrinology PA and they run a lot of tests on site (I had to have specialized tyroid testing). Maybe their office has something similar? You have to assume if they have been trying to conceive for so long, she has probably read up on all kinds of conditions and medications. She may be well aware of the possible side effects but still have brought the idea up with her doctor. It's a very personal issue and testing is quite invasive/embarrassing for both parents and they may not want to share that. I mean would you really want to know your brother did it in a cup?

^lol Yeah...not really. Good point. So far, I have let them tell me what they want and have been encouraging when they have shared. I will keep doing that and keep my advice to a minimum.

  • A lot of testing is recommended here but at the very least I would think her husband should have a sperm analysis.

It's most likely clomid that she was given. She should be monitored, but many OB's give it without the monitoring. It's possible that they've had testing and don't want to share all the details. I would probably mention something casually about monitoring, but not be pushy as IF is, obviously, a very sensitive subject.

Thank you so much! Your points and perspectives are extremely helpful. I probably would have put my foot in my mouth several times if it was not for your suggestions. I also think it is tricky because my brother is definitely an over-sharer and my sil is more private. I would not want her to be embarrassed because of what he has shared, so I think I will remain mum and let her talk when she wants and is ready.
