9 month twins naps...

My b/g twins would be 9 months on 9th. Their sleep habits have changed a lot lately. They are taking 1-2 naps a day which last anywhere from 45mins to 1 and a half hour. I'm going crazy as I'm all by myself as DH is traveling. They are in their cribs at 8pm and wake up anytime between 6-8am, it's mostly 6 or 6:30am. Yesterday they got up at 6:30am and took a nap at 8:45am for 45 minutes and their second nap was at 1pm for 1 and a half hour and then went to sleep at 7:45pm.

Today they woke up at 7am and took their first nap at 10am for one and a half hour. My son took his second nap at 3:15pm which lasted for 45mins and my daughter hasn't slept since 11:45am!!!! I've tried putting her to sleep 2-3 times, but in vain. They keep rubbing their eyes, yawn, rub their ears etc., but when I take them in the room they are wide awake and cry to come outside. I'm going crazy.

I'm worried more for my daughter as she's giving me a hard time to put her down for her naps. It's almost 6pm and she's been up for more than 6 hours straight!!! I want them to nap properly.

My son is sleep trained, where as my daughter isn't. She's very demanding and I'll start sleep training her when my hubby's back from work in a day. With sleep trained I mean my son sleeps on his own when put in his crib at nights. For naps he sits beside me in our recliner. Where as my daughter always has to be held till she sleeps and I then move her to her crib.

Please help I'm worried for them. Is this normal? My pediatrician said its normal and as long as they are sleeping 12-14 hours in 24 hours it's fine. She didn't seem concerned when I told her that they are up for 4-5 hours after a nap, but today my daughter has crossed all the lines. Lol. Please advice.

Re: 9 month twins naps...

  • My girls dropped their third nap about a month ago and I tired to do a loose routine of 2-3-4 that I read about. It works great for them if you want to try. Basically when they wake up in the morning I put them down for a nap 2 hours later, when they get up from that nap I wait 3 hours and put them down again. After the second nap its 4 hours until bedtime. They developed an early bedtime of 630-7 since about 3 months old so their typical day is wake up 7, nap 9-10, nap again 1-2 and then bedtime. Some days one will wake up early from a nap and I wake the other within a half hour to keep them not too far of each others schedule. They do say as long as they get enough sleep overall its not a problem but I know my girls would be crazy fussy if they stayed up too long in between naps. I did sort of sleep train them for naps when they started crib napping last month , the first day they cried around 10 minutes I stayed in the room and patted their back and reassured them until they fell asleep.

  • That sounds normal. My boys are 10mo and take 2 naps that range from 45 min to 1.5 hrs each. They go to bed around 8pm and get up around 630 or 7am. They don't STTN - I feed them once overnight and are up one or two more times in addition.

My oldest was down to one nap by 9mo. So if they still take 2 naps, that's a bonus in my book.

Thanks @carrotcake06‌ - Your reply made me feel a lot better, but now I'm worried how I'll manage when they'll take only one nap later on. It's seriously very hard when you're all by yourself with the twins for 3-4 days. Do your sons sleep in the same room? If yes, do they wake each other up or are they both sound sleepers? My son is a sound sleeper where as my daughter isn't. However, after 5am my son literally struggles to wake up and become active. Lol. My twins still take two feedings at night. One at midnight and the other at 4am. I wonder when they'll STTN.
  • @sing4mysavior‌- When does it really get better? I personally feel as they are growing up things are getting more complicated and tougher. :(
  • @Wishing35‌ - I'll surely give it a try when my hubby returns. Your routine sounds relaxed. Hope it works on them. :| Thanks.
  • No doubt it's exhausting. MH travels as well, but I do have family to lean on to help me juggle working, daycare pick up and drop off for the big one, and the "race to bedtime" as I like to call the dinner/bath/bed routines.

My twins do share a room. One is a much better sleeper than the other. My oldest is and always has been an awful sleeper, so I deal w a night waking from him most nights as well. Sometimes it coincides w the twins' wakings and sometimes not.

One day we'll sleep again and it will be wonderful!

  • This sounds pretty age-appropriate to me. With things like sleeping and eating, I try not to stress about it until it's been a week +. Kids go through all sorts of phases. If it's been over a week, then I decide it's time to re-evaluate our current schedule.
