Veggies?

My LO eats table foods really well, but won't eat vegetables anymore. When she was only on purees, I could feed her any vegetable puree and she would eat it no problem. Now that she is only feeding herself, she will pick around the vegetables I give her.

I am not TOO concerned about nutrition, because she eats healthy foods and loves (LOVES!) fruit, but I want her to develop healthy eating habits.

If I put different foods on her tray at once, she will eat the fruit, then the starch or meat, then the vegetables. Or sometimes won't eat the veggie at all. If I hide the veggie in the food, she can pick it out and eat everything else. I once made her macaroni and cheese and hid corn in with the pasta because I figured she couldn't tell the difference because it was all the same color. She could tell the difference, and didn't eat the corn.

Before you suggest I JUST give her veggies one meal, or give them first before everything else, I have tried that. She will usually just play with them or throw them on the floor and then I end up having to give her the stuff she will eat so she won't be hungry.

Besides this veggie issue, she is not picky at all and will eat almost anything else we give her. She tends to like "strange" foods - like she LOVED the watermelon/feta salad I made my husband and I, and she ate pasta salad made with balsamic vinegar like a champ. I would have figured that feta cheese or balsamic would be too strong of flavors for a baby. So I don't think this veggie issue is due to them having stronger flavors.

Ideas??

I was concerned about the seasoning because I thought adding salt was a no-no. Clearly I am not too concerned about salt because things like feta cheese is salty, but i have been trying not to purposely add salt. I'll try garlic!!

  • @sympkin - she won't eat anything she can't feed herself anymore, so no mashed foods.
  • I always offer either veggies or fruit but never both at the same time. You can season veggies with garlic, paprika, turmeric, cumin, tyme and rosemary are all options.

  • What veggies are you offering?  Maybe try offering something new (even to you) or preparing it another way.  I made roasted squash with cinnamon on it and even my 4 year old ate it up because he said it tasted like pumpkin pie :)

  • Thanks everyone for the ideas. I think I need to switch up the veggies or do some serious seasoning. She likes cumin so I will try that.

@elmoali - I have tried asparagus, corn, peas, brocolli, lima beans, carrots, squash, cucumber, tomato, in their whole (non-pureed) forms. She used to eat veggies way better but recently won't even try them so I have no idea how she will know I did some tasty seasoning on them! I will keep offering though. Luckily she will eat literally any fruit so at least she gets some good vitamins that way. The kid is going to eat me out of house and home in (expensive) berries.
