Breastfeeding to Bottle Advice

SORRY IF THIS GETS LONG

So, LO has only had 2 bottles in his 4.5 months. One was at a week old and one was at 2 months. Last week DH took him to MILs birthday and he refused to eat. He pushed the bottle away and didn't eat for 5 hours. When we did the 2 bottles before, he took them without a problem. I want him to take a bottle for times when we go out or DH/grandparents want to take him. We've tried Dr. Browns, Avent, Avent Natural and Medela since last week with no success. Also, he has a sensitive gag reflex and the nipples seem to be too long. Any advice?

Re: Breastfeeding to Bottle Advice

  • I don't really have any advice except we use the anti colic Tommee tippee bottles and love them!
  • Loading the player...
  • My LO will not take a bottle either. We are trying sippy cups now and have had some success.

  • You just have to keep trying different ones until you find something that works. It also might take a few tries with the same one before he figures out how to get the milk out. Try squeezing a little milk out of the tip so he gets the idea 'food comes from here'.

  • I've heard some moms have success with the "momma" bottle by Lansinoh
  • Tommee tippee worked for us
  • We had to get the NUK brand. I give LO a bottle at bedtime every night so that she won't forget how to drink from one!

Try the orange latex nipples. Leila hates the clear silicone ones...

Tommee Tippee and a lot of patience. Also make sure the milk is warm enough. C wouldn't take milk from a bottle unless it was the same temp as milk straight from the breast in the beginning. She'll take it warm now, but she was extra particular when we were just starting to introduce bottles.

Does he take a pacifier? Which one? It's usually a good idea to find a nipple similar to that.

This. LO would only take a mam pacifier, same for bottles.
  • My LO uses NUK pacifiers and we tried the medela nipple because it came with the pump. He took it once. And then refused after I went and spent $40 on two more nipples (of course). But he will take the NUK bottles no problem. Which makes sense. He likes the soother so he should like the similar nipple on the bottle.

I also went and bought the Avent bottle warmer. It fits the NUK bottles and was $40 I think. Anyways. Totally worth it. It's so nice for warming up the bottles! I bought it initially for my husband so giving bottles when I was away would be as stress free as possible. But I love it too! Anything to make life easier!!

He does not take a pacifier, but, when we tried, we had the most success with MAM. Thanks for the tip @Loolaide‌

    This !
My LO would only drink from a bottle with a latex nipple. We used the nuk ones. Once he figured it out how it works he started accepting avent
  • One of the things that I read about babies refusing the bottle is that its not necessarily about the brand of bottle...its just the fact that its not a boob. They recommended picking a bottle type and sticking with the one type for consistency. Here is the article with some good tips:

Exactly this...LO would not take a bottle, but loves her Mam pacis. I finally tried the Mam Anti Colic bottle after having no success with a bunch of other brands, and bingo -- finally found the one she'll take. Definitely worth trying!

  • My LO refused bottles for months and we went through 6 different bottles before she finally took the Lansinoh mOmma bottle. Sucked it right in. She would gag on pacifiers and other bottle nipples before we tried this one. Lots of patience and walking while feeding it to her helped, and warmed milk. Good luck because I know how frustrating this can be.

We just the Tommee Tippee Anti Colic bottles as well but it's still a bit of a struggle.  It takes a lot of patience but you'll get there! Here are some suggestions.

    1. Make sure you are NOT the one giving the bottle

    2. Make sure you are more than 20 feet away as LO can smell you and your milk!

    3. When giving a bottle don't cradle baby like you do when you are nursing. Make it a different experience. DH holds DD out in front of him on his lap with one hand behind her head so he's looking at her straight on.

    4. Try giving then the bottle when they are hungry but not ravenous. LO is less likely to tolerate something new when they are really hungry.

    Good luck!
