Newborn gas problems

Any suggestions on helping reduce gas in a newborn? DD is 2w2d old and has horrible gas. She cries and cries and you can hear her stomach rumbling, and then eventually she gets it out. We started her on the sensitive formula on Sunday, burp her throughout her bottles (although we rarely get a burp), bicycle her legs, and I just got Mylicon drops to try with her next bottle. She was up crying and miserable for a long time last night. Thanks!

Little tummies gas drops. They work great and are perfectly safe to give at every feeding if necessary. They literally move right through their systems.

  • I was going to suggest gas drops as well. Does your bottle have a lot of bubbles that don't go away after shaking? We had bottles like that with DD1 and this time we got different bottles for DD2 and it is amazing how quickly the air and bubble dissipate after shaking it. I think that helps too.

My first suggestion for gassy FF babies is always to gently stir the bottle with a long spoon, never shake or swirl. That eliminated about 75% of DS's gas and spit-up problems. On a bad day I'd keep him upright in the vibrating bouncer for 15 minutes or so or jiggle him gently on my knee or in my arms, and that helped too. He'd almost always give me a good burp after a few minutes of jiggling.

  • Thanks! We use Dr. Browns bottles which helped with DD1, but I will try stirring the bottles. I have heard good things about the Windi, but I had completely forgotten about it. Just gave her gas drops with this bottle, so hopefully they will help!

  • With DD we used little remedies gas drops, they worked great she would come down almost immediately after getting them. I think they also make special bottles that are suppose to reduce gas, but I EBF so never actually used them.

  • With DD it ended up being a lactose intolerance issue. Once we switched formulas, changed 100% in a day. Hope baby is feeling better soon.
  • My DS had so much tummy trouble as an infant. We tried everything! Gripe water worked a little bit but overall nothing seemed to help. What did work though was placing DS high so his belly was against your shoulder and then patting him firmly. Also you can lay your baby across your knees and gently bounce them. You don't know the countless times our poor little DS fell asleep these ways. I hope your baby overcomes it soon... Honestly it lasted months with our little guy.
