August 2014 Moms

Let me know if this has been discussed recently - mild pyelectasis?

Hi lovely ladies of August 2014,

I have a tickle in my brain that this has been discussed on our board before, but couldn't find it. We just got back from our 20 week anatomy scan and everything checked out great, as well as us finding out we're Team Blue! :) The perinatologist did let us know there's one thing they want to watch - the baby has mild pyelectasis which is extra fluid in the kidneys. They want to keep an eye on it and have me come back in 12 weeks. He said it's more common in boys, and that it usually resolves on its own. He also said it's a very soft marker for Downs Syndrome, but that because all of our other testing came back negative, he still considers us very low-risk and doesn't recommend any extra testing. We booked the next ultrasound with him in 12 weeks and I am fully trusting the perinatologist that it is common and not a big deal. Just curious to see if anyone else had this same result and how you're feeling about it.

Thank you :)

  • I'm assuming no one else here? I will search on previous baby month boards, see what I can find.

  • Dd had this when I was pregnant in 2012. I had to have ultrasounds every few weeks to monitor her kidneys. at the time I was told that 90% of the time the issue resolves itself in utero. This was the case with dd. She was given a test at the hospital involving some sort of dye to see if there were still any issues. It sounds like your doctor isn't too concerned if he isn't going to do an ultrasound for another 12 weeks. It is very likely that the issue will resolve itself before he is even born so try not to worry too much :)
  • Thanks very much @kimberlybethh! I appreciate the answer. That is what I figured too - he's not having us come back until 12 weeks from now, And in searching past boards I found lots of posts on the topic.

  • Hi! I just did a search on the topic, and your post came up.  Im 21 wks today, and like yourself at my 20 wk ultrasound, I was told my baby girl is healthy and normal, but that there was some mild fluid retention in one of her kidneys ( I think I heard mild swelling). Doc said he wasn't concerned and that I shouldn't either bc its pretty common.  He did tell me he'd have to readjust my down syndrome stats, which were very low anyway.  That sent me spiraling into worry :( OB advised she was able to offer M21 test now if I wanted just to reassure me, but that she wasn't saying I should.  I took it anyway just to ease my mind... Hoping her little kidney gets better when I go for next check...

Yep! Froda, MacKenzie has this. Madison caught up to her, and then they noticed this on the baby we weren't worried about. But my MFM said the same thing your perinatologist did. They also said they see it about 6 times a day. LOL

  • This happened to my BFF and it resolved itself in-utero.

  • I go back in 2 weeks to my OB. and at 28 wks to U/S doc

  • Just because this post has come up in the search function before, I just wanted to re-visit and update for anyone who looks back on it. I just got back from my follow up ultrasound at 33 weeks and it did indeed resolve, on both kidneys. :) Yay! Very happy. All the doc said was to inform my pediatrician that we did see it at 20 weeks, so that they have the information for the future.
