Am I crazy? Or could the ultrasound be wrong?

Hi Everyone,

I'm new and have a question-

I got my 20 week US done yesterday ( this is my first baby!) and the tech told me we were having a boy. She didn't seem very confident though, and after comparing my friends' u/s of their baby boys I feel my baby may be a girl with either her umbilical cord showing or maybe she has some swelling?

Is it possible? Am I in denial?

Kind opinions appreciated!

I think the tech knows what she's talking about, she looks at this stuff all the time and is trained on looking at those fuzzy blobs. I'm not trained on this at all, and it looks like a boy to me, nothing like my girl ultrasound. Congrats on your baby boy.

Looks like a boy to me. When I had my ultra sound done a few weeks ago the tech wasn't 100% sure but once the doc looked at it and was like yep its a boy.

That's a boy. My girl is very obviously a girl (3 white lines). You have a huge bulge in the absence of white lines. If it makes you feel better, name him Sue but he's still a boy.

Seriously. Perspective is so effed up in society. Is your kid healthy? That's far more important, but you'd never know it these days with the way everyone goes on and on with ultrasound shots, second guessing techs, sex reveal parties, and all the other nursery stuff/baby gear.

I'm going to throw a "Healthy Anatomy Scan" Party so people stop being so clueless. Maybe it'll catch on. But, I doubt it given the mentality that is so abundant around here.

Seriously. I can't tell you how many people called me after our a/s for DD asking what I was having. Not one person asked me if everything looked okay with the baby, even though I had a really shitty a/s with my first that showed a few soft markers for Down's Syndrome. When I told people we were Team Green ( as we had been for my son), they were shocked and outraged. "Well how do you prepare for the baby?" Uh, they all need the same stuff, regardless of sex organs. "How am I supposed to shop for the baby?" Um, thanks but you don't have to if it's so distressing for you. People are really fucking weird about this.

We will be team green this time. I didn't know if my first child was a boy or a girl because she was born at 28 weeks and her anatomy scan wasn't conclusive.

Now, when she was born, what do you think the very first question I asked was? If you guessed "Is it a girl or boy?" You'd be WRONG! I asked if the baby was okay. She spent 64 days in the NICU. Guess what, when she got home, we needed all the same shit a little boy needs.

We also have friends who just had a baby girl and were told boy. Did they flip? Nope, the returned some stuff and got a little pink.

Relax. Why are people so weird about what they are having? For me, I just want a baby that doesn't have to spend 60 days being poked, prodded and fighting to breath...call me crazy. I don't care if you want to find out what you having, but don't lose your shit over it.

To play devil's advocate for a sec, lots of people, especially those that haven't had kids before don't realize what all goes on during the anatomy scan. Half the people in my department at work asked "what took so long?!" when I got back because no one realize all the measurements and whatnot that goes on. Some people simply don't know and when it comes to a pregnant person, most people just want to know the sex and how you are feeling. Doesn't make them assholes.

I get what you're saying about he a/s and can allow that I was being sensitive because of my scary experience the first time around. But I still think the follow up questions I got were seriously worthy of an eye-roll

I am for some reason and I normally don't ever feel that way, especially about the 2 of you. Maybe because I just had my a/s 2 days ago, who knows. Just thought this thread was getting way out of control for the topic at hand.

My $0.02. Finding out if you are going to have a son or a daughter is exciting to the majority of the public, myself included, and there is nothing wrong with that. Most people day dream about their future children and what it will be like, it's normal.

I am in a rather unique position that most people do not face. When I was a child I went with my mother to her Anatomy Scan. My mother found out at that appointment that my little sister was going to die. I remember every detail. I remember seeing the little baby on the screen and being so excited. I remember the doctor saying, "There is something wrong." I remember another doctor coming in the room, and then another doctor, and then another doctor. I remember my mother and the look on her face. I remember all the pain my family went through after that. It is seared in my brain.

I am at a higher risk for my children having neural tube defects. It scares the hell out of me. The last 2 pregnancies I spent the first half of it afraid of what I was going to see at the A/S. Hoping that my child has their skull. You know what I think about to help try to calm my nerves? Getting to find out if I am going to have son or a daughter. I choose to try and focus on something else, the positive and fun, not the negative and worry because it drives me crazy thinking about it. Being excited or happy to find out the sex does not mean I do not care about my baby's health.

Some people are blissfully unaware of what can happen during an A/S. It doesn't even dawn on them that this is an important medical scan because they don't think anything could ever be wrong. It's just a chance to see the baby.

I do not condone being ignorant on what the scan is actually for. People should be fully aware of what is going on with their pregnancy and child. It actually worries me how much people really don't pay attention or care to know how things work.

I do not condone people calling it a gender scan. I do not condone the annoying amount of people who don't trust their doctors to give them the most accurate information they can. I don't condone asking random people if they can figure out what the sex. But damn man, there is NOTHING wrong with being happy and excited!!

Joy, sometimes I find your views on this subject a bit extreme. You remind me of the couple who hid the sex of their child from everyone until it was 5 years old.

No matter what, the sex of a child will have a huge impact on who they are, it is what it is. People are excited because it feels like it's a first step in getting to know their child. That in no way shape or form means they need a Xanax.

What is the this? Don't know, neither does anyone else that isn't a tech.

It is a newborn stomach scan, no privates involved.

You take a born baby's picture of a stomach, privates or anything else and it is apparent.

There is nothing wrong with being excited about what you are having. I have had good and bad scans.. Some required scans every 2-3 weeks for a serious issue and I still was excited to find out the sex of my babies. It is curiosity. It doesn't make you love your child more or less because you are patient enough to wait until 40 weeks
