Suggestions for Baby proofing fireplace?

I know the obvious answer is a gate but my DH insisted I ask my "baby group" this question... We don't use our fireplace ever because our TV is mounted above it. Unfortunately KJ is very interested in getting into the fireplace and grabbing the candles I have inside. Besides a wide gate to go around it, does anyone have any suggestions for blocking the opening that will not look awful? See pic below.

  • I found this. I think this is a great way to baby proof your fireplace!

  • I can't tell from the pic, but do you have glass doors on the front? If so could you put some kind of something through the handles to prevent him from opening and getting to the candles inside? If it's less fun to get at maybe he would lose interest.

No door. Just a mesh curtain that slides open and closed. She loves to bang on the mesh curtain and run toys over it. She also has figured out how to open and close it.

  • My parents took a heavy piece of plastic, (1/4" thick) and had it cut to slightly bigger than the fireplace. They stuck it on with velcro.
