May 2013 Moms

Words?

Hey mommas! I'm just wondering how many of your LOs are saying a word or more.

Emmett babbles (mostly dada) all day, but it is not directed towards anything. I just read on babycenter that I should be concerned if he hasn't said a couple of words by the time he turns 1.

His birthday is May 17th, and now I'm freaking out that he hasn't started speaking yet.

Anyone else not speaking yet?

Gus says Dada, Mama and uh oh.  When he says dada and mama he points at us and he is always saying uh oh when he throws things or drops things lol  it is his new favorite thing to say

  • Arthur can say mama and dada, and direct them to us, and he can say "yes" and "no" and sometimes he'll throw in a "duck" and he's just started doing "uh oh." His birthday is May 22.   Now, other than Mama and Dada, none of his other words are said with any sort of consistency. Except right now "uh oh" is everything. We "uh oh'd" all through Target today.  Turn a corner, "Uh Oh." Stop to get something off a shelf? "Uh Oh" *sigh*

  • I'm not sure...She definitely says dada and mama but hard to tell if she has attached the meaning.  I noticed her repeating dada over and over when H comes in the room but she says it at other times too when he's not around.  Similar thing with mama.  I thought I heard her say bye a few times but have not heard it again.  She will be 1 on 5/21.  I worry about this too but I try to keep reminding myself that it's like everything else, she'll get there when she's ready.

This but change 14 to 15. He just learned to crawl so I figure words will be awhile. He is starting daycare next month I am hoping being around more people will help.
Us too except we're May 9th. J's got exactly 2 weeks to learn some words damn it.
  • She says Dada, Up, Hi, ta-ta and when she sees the cats she says "keeee" (like trying to say kitty)

  • DS says uh oh consistently, bye bye semi-consistently, and mama only when he's upset. He only says dada when babbling. Lately he's been copying words and even says "I see you!" but it's like ah-see-ooooo. But the only things he says with meaning is mama and bye bye. He says "bow!" a lot when he points and I'm always wondering what he's trying to communicate with that word, lol.

Madison loves to talk she says mama, dada/daddy, yes, hi/hey/bye, dog, bird, uh oh, yum and woah. The only one I'm not sure has meaning is woah lol. She did try to say wa wa today which I realized she was reaching for her sippy cup. I wouldn't worry to much, it can happen so fast.

She says dada (when she sees him and when I pretend he's on the phone which she kisses), hiya, car (points to it in her book and says it) and she's trying to say duck but it's just "du" at the minute.

She says mama but it's not directed at me :(

  • LO has always been very verbal- an early babbler. She can say momma, baby, uh-oh, row row row, no and yeah.

  • LO repeats all the following words: hi, bye, look, happy, mama, dada, apple, uncle.

However, the only ones she uses with purpose are hi, bye, mama, and dada.

  • R doesn't turn 11 months for a few more days but all we have is Dada which he says to DH and my dad occasionally. He is working on other letters. My mom said he said Mama but I haven't heard it. When he sees our dog Coco he makes the C sound. Other than that he just sounds like a velociraptor.
  • C says dada (both when referring to DH and as a general identifier of things), baby (sounds a lot like dada), doggie (duh dug), kitty (gatee), cup (ga), and uh oh. She will wave if I say "hi" or "bye bye." She is big into the letter D sound, so most things she tries to say or identify sound a lot like dada :) I can't wait for her to say mama! I keep telling DH he needs to identify me more to her, haha.

  • N will be a year on May 11th and he doesn't have any words. He just jabber sometimes, but not nearly as often or as much as he used to. He just shrieks most of the time. I'll admit that I have been a little worried since B had a few words by now and jabbered so much more.

He doesn't point or clap either.
    Brady (7.15.10) and Nolan (5.11.13)
  • I think we have cat and dog...some babbling mama/dada but definitely nothing consistent.

According to my mom, I didn't talk to a year and a half...and I was always pretty advanced verbally once in school so don't worry too much.

Some babies do things before others but I think in most cases it balances out by kindergarten and kids begin to show their real talents and aptitudes then.

Connor says ball, dada, kitty, bottle, uh-oh, ok, and his brother's names. No mama, though.

    Eta: he'll be 1 on 5/3
  • Mama, dada and nana are said not directed at us. Hi and bye are said while waving. Uh oh is said when she drops something. I wouldn't be concerned yet.

I usually lurk but had been posting in the weight loss check-ins so it's understandable if you don't recognize my sn.
  • No words here that mean anything.  She has lots of syllables but uses the indiscriminately, with the exception of "KA" for the cats.

B calls me "mama" and "baba" for bottle. He called dh "mom" last week. He is way too busy walking and getting into things at the moment. He is a late May baby. I am not too concerned- they focus on one skill (walking or talking) and can't do both at the same time. So if your Lo is focused on walking or crawling or moving thats the skill your Lo is working on.
I'm not sure this is always the case? I mean literally at the same time, sure, but I believe babies are reaching both language milestones and motor skill milestones all along their first couple of years. So they are obviously focused on both along the way.

I do believe one can tend to be stronger than the other, but I didn't know there was scientific evidence saying they learn one at a time. Is there?

I have read that while going through physical leaps (crawling/walking) many babies become less verbal until they've mastered the skill. Who knows though.

  • DS will be 1 on 5/3 and he says mama, dada, and uh-oh. I don't think he associates mama and dada with me and DH yet, but he knows uh-oh really well. It was funny when he was on the bed with us and said uh-oh and then dropped the remote off the side. The other day he was holding a baseball and said "ba", but I don't know if it meant anything.

He is constantly babbling and I wouldn't for the life of me be able to repeat or spell them out. I will try not to worry until we go for his appt on 5/8.

  • I don't think she says any words, but she's got four or five signs down. I'm not really worried.
  • My LO is super chatty in the morning lots of Dada. It sounds like he screams Mama when I am not quick enough with a bottle. I think he said Dog the other day but only did it twice and hasn't said it since. He also has started stretching his arms up and saying YEAH!!! when he eats something good....something we started when he started eating adult food good.

  • We are May 10 and while she doesn't direct anything to us (mama dada hi) she will look around when we ask about the dog, wave and blow kisses on command, and grab the spoon or bowl when asked. I assume she'll be like she was with crawling - late and like she'd been doing it the whole time. Our appt is May 12 so we shall see if doctor is concerned which I doubt...
  • DH swears S says mama and dada with a purpose, but I've never seen either directed at anyone. she does say uh-oh but only if we say it first. her only "word" that she says all the time is ha-ta and i have absolutely no idea what that means. Sooooo, yah, I'm going with nope, no real words that she knows the meaning of. And she'll be one in a week so there's that...
     image
  • DD says 5 words (Dada, Mama, Dog, Clap and Agua) but of those she only knows 4 of them...of course the one she doesn't associate is Mama (smdh lol).

At any rate, I wouldn't worry too much before the year at all. I've seen sooo many babies not say their first words until a few months past the 1st Birthday and then boom...they know like 10 words all of a sudden lol. Definitely bring it up at your 1 year appt but don't stress it. Plus boys tend to speak later anyway.

  • J says mama dada and looks at us. He says Ba for ball. Other than that, he has LONG conversations that include just a bunch of babbles  =)

DS will be 1 on the 29th.  Aside from mama, he mostly babbles. He repeats the words uh-oh and car, but not with purpose yet. We think he's saying "more" when he wants more food, but it sounds like "meh."

DS is 1 on the 11th, Mother's Day, and although he babbles nonstop and it sounds like a real sentence or question, he's only said mama once and dada once. I don't know what to think about them since both times he said it while reaching for us. That was a month ago and nothing since. No walking here either. Just learned to crawl smoothly a couple weeks ago so that must be the skill he's 'focusing' on.
