Underwire nursing bras

Alright, I have a large bust (32G) and have spent some money on the Elomi nursing bra. While it's better than a sports bra, it gives my boobs a weird cone shape and lacks support. The nursing store that I went to doesn't even sell bras with underwires and the sales lady basically told me I would get mastitis. Now that my supply is and leveled out, is this true? Is anyone successfully using an underwire nursing bra? I'm dying for a bra with support and will look normal under a tee shirt.

I've had the opposite problem - can't find a bra without an underwire that's actually supportive (ie, not a soft cup). Found a really good selection of bras with and without wires at Motherhood Maternity. The one I ended up getting has structure like a wired bra, but doesn't actually have a wire. I have also heard a wired bra will cause mastitis, and I don't want to tempt fate. FWIW, I wore wireless last time and never had mastitis.

  • I actually found 2 nursing bras I liked at our local pharmacy. One with a wire, one without. I definitely prefer the one with the wire-it gives a ton more support. I only wear it when I'm at work-it's the only bra I can comfortably pump in. I have not had any issues with mastitis, and I've been wearing it on and off for 7 weeks

  • I second motherhood maternity. I got the Mia bra there. It has all the support and structure of an underwire bra without the wire. I'm currently a D cup and I don't miss the wire.

I've been wearing an underwire nursing bra for about two months now and love it. I'm a 34E and also have oversupply, so I really needed good support. Mine is by Anita, and I got it at Nordstrom.

FWIW, our Nordstrom will also take any bra you find in store and alter it into a nursing bra for $15.

I also wear an underwire Anita. I wore it for 13 months last time and no mastitis. It is lace and looks pretty much like a normal bra. They have them on amazon, but I got fitted for the first one at a lingerie store (like a real one, not VS).

I buy all of my bras from bareneccessities.com They have both wireless and underwire bras and come in all the sizes. Now that I'm nursing I'm a 36I and have never had trouble getting bras there. Most of the time I also get them on free shipping and have never had any trouble with returns if I need a different size. Good luck!!
  • Thanks everyone! I'm on a mission today and hopefully these new resources help me out ;)
  • I have an underwire Anita too and love it :) I also had an underwire bra converted at Nordstrom (OMG comfiest bra ever!). I can't stand wireless, the boning rubs on my ribs. All I wore with DD1 were wired and no issues

This information may have just changed my life. Thank you!
  • I also wear a 32G and I cannot go without an underwire. I bought a few anita's from amazon and they are super comfortable--no mastisis.

Here are the ones I bought:

I wear the target Gillian and Omalley underwire nursing bras from Target. Not sure what size they go up to. I wore them while BFing DD too. I didn't get mastitis until I stopped Nursing.

  • Just ordered an Anita from Amazon! Can't wait, fingers crossed it fits!
  • I also have an Anita underwire one that I love. No problems so far. The lady who fitted me at the nursing store said that as long as the bra fits properly the underwire shouldn't cause any problems.
