Diaper rash help

DD keeps getting a diaper rash that turns into a yeast rash. When we saw our pedi last, they gave her some Nystatin cream to treat it, and after about 1.5 weeks, it cleared up. It keeps coming back though - we use the Nystatin at the first sign that it's back and usually it clears up pretty fast. It's starting showing back up the past couple of days, so I put the Nystatin on twice yesterday (prescription says to use it 3xs a day). Towards the end of dinner time, DD starts crying hysterically. She was super tired, so we thought that was the problem. We went to change DD's diaper and she was super super red down there and was obviously in a lot of pain because she was basically crying to the point of hyperventilating. Mom put her in a lukewarm bath (she used to work Labor and Delivery and said it was like a sitz bath for a postpartum mom) and after holding DD down in the water for awhile, she started to feel better and spent some time playing. Mom was afraid she was having a reaction to the Nystatin, so we didn't use it last night but opted for super thick coating of diaper cream. This morning, while it was less red, it still looked pretty bad. It looks like a yeast rash to me- same as it looked when we saw the dr last. I am going to call them on lunch and see if there is something else they can recommend to treat it, but I was wondering what remedies you all use so that the next time it starts to pop up, maybe I can get it under control before it gets this bad...last night was awful and I never want to see her like that again if I can help it.

Skye's never had a rash that bad,she has had pretty bad ones those and we use Desitn.   When she is rash free we use Vaseline on her as a preventive. Maybe that might help?

Edit - Could it possible be from using a new product, detergent, wash soap, or a new diaper brand?

  • Aw, your poor dd. I don't really have remedies but I wanted to add that it may help to make sure she is taking a probiotic/yogurt and switching diapers just in case they are adding to the trouble. Also, you may want to make an appt with your pedi to rule out of it is fungal related which can be treated with lotrimin if it is or whatever they think is best. Also, make sure all her sheets/towels are washed in hot water to get rid of any yeast. Also, lots of naked time and warm wash cloths instead of wipes. I hope your dd feels better. Lastly, make sure it is not something acidic she is eating that could be causing a rash too.

I was sort of wondering about the acidic thing...she had apple juice yesterday and we had something similar happen one other time she had it (but she's had it since and been ok)...so I told them nothing but water and milk to drink today so see if that helps....DD's been a mostly Huggies baby since she got into size 2s (my uncle scored us diapers through his job), but we've also used Luvs and Pampers (I have an assorted stash at home) and she's had this problem even when I was using one of the other brands, so I don't think that's it...Thanks for the tips though, at this point, I'm willing to try just about anything to get this under control.

  • You don't use cloth diapers, do you? I assume you would have mentioned it, but just thought I'd ask.

Be sure to do what PP said about washing everything.

A few months ago my son had yeast really bad after a course of antibiotics and we treated it with Nystatin. Since then, if he looks like he's getting it again, I use this: https://amzn.com/B000GLK6K2. It's an add-on item at Amazon, but you can get it from online (or brick and mortar) cloth diaper stores. It has worked great for us.

  • We don't use cloth diapers. Thanks for the suggestion @valeriegp ..there's a place in town that very well may sell that (or something really close)...I'll have to check it out.

  • Diaper free time for sure. For a few days just give her a small bath if you can instead if using wipes if it's too red. We were on vacation when dd was 9 months. She got such a bad rash (I think from too many blueberries and the sand at the beach) that EVERY SINGLE poopy diaper we put her in the tub...it was a pain but worth it.

We change her as soon as she's wet or poopy so we don't really see many rashes. I'm super vigilant though and if i see even one little dot on her bottom I put Burt's bees diaper creme on it. We have nystatin too but only needed it for 1 round

  • No tips for getting rid of it since we haven't had yeast issues yet, but we've had a few diaper rashes that were pretty bad (red sores, etc). We've found that avoiding them is easier than treating them, so we use Desitin before bed every night (since she'll potentially be wet a good chunk of the night) and after most dirty diapers. We've been pretty lucky lately.

  • The worst rash DS got was actually a reaction to something he was allergic to. It was REALLY red and bumpy and I thought it might be yeast, but the dr. saw it and said it was a reaction to a new diaper cream I was trying. We switched back to the old cream and used hydrocortisone cream for a while. I don't recommend doing this without your doctor's instructions - you may want to make an appointment to actually see your doctor so that he can give his two cents after doing an in-person exam, though.

GL to you and your LO!
  • We had yeast diaper rash when DD was 6 months old.  We used a pea-sized amount of Lotrimin (spelling?) at every change, and continued to use it for 5 days after the rash was gone.  Never got it again.
  • Apparently, posting for advice was enough to clear it up, lol. Yesterday morning it was still pretty red, but by yesterday evening, all the raised bumps were gone and it was just barley pink. This morning, it looks even better. We've been using a super thick layer of regular diaper cream with every diaper (which is what we do every time). I am starting to wonder if it maybe it wasn't a combination of things- too much juice (she spends all day Sunday with her grandparents and they tend to spoil her a bit), heat rash maybe (we were out on dad's screened-in porch most of Sunday evening), but then again, it had started Sat...so I don't know...but it's clearing up faster than yeast ever has....crazy baby

I do have a question for those of your that suggest naked time- how do you do it without your kid making a huge mess? DD doesn't stand still for a second while she's awake, so short of covering every bit of floor space and furniture in our house with towels, I have no idea how I'd keep her from peeing all over everything.

For diaper free time, either in the bathroom or kitchen where the floor is easy to clean up or throw down some vinyl table clothes in the living room. Expect to clean up some pee.

DD has only had a couple bad diaper rashes but we do diaper free time, baths with baking soda in them, then a coat of lanolin on her butt with some desitin on top of that at every diaper change, and finally no diaper wipes just wet cloths. If i was only going to do one of these things, it would be the lanolin.

  • We've done diaper free time in the crib, where there's a waterproof mattress pad. If he pees, I have to do laundry but that's not too tough. (We haven't had him pee out the side of the crib yet... here's hoping that never happens!)
  • We just clean up any mess if she makes one. Only once did she poop...usually she doesn't pee either but sometimes she does and we just clean it up really well.

Does she need juice for some reason? Our ped said it's overrated and no use for it. We already never give any to her so it didn't matter but he threw the advice out there anyway. If it bothers her, even possibly, I would just skip it. And I'd tell the grandparents the same thing

No, she doesn't....and I've told them that I would prefer she not have it more than once a day (she is obsessed with it- she knows what it looks like and will open the fridge, get it out, and try to drink it straight out of the container...we don't keep it in the house, but Mom does) but there are times when they think they know better than me and give it to her anyway...

eta...maybe this will finally break them of the habit since not giving it to her the last couple of days may have helped with her rash..i can't prove that, but they can't disprove it either
