pack n play - useful?

One of my friends is offering to give me her pack n play which is super nice. However, I was just wondering if you ladies have found them useful if you have them. We have a small house with very little storage so space is at a premium. Most of my friends said that mostly they used theirs when they traveled, but I am not so sure we will be traveling with infant twins very much and even then wouldn't we need TWO pack n plays? I've also been told that the bassinet is useful for sleep in the early months, but we are planning on using rock n plays for that.

Thoughts?

Personal preference. We have only one and have used it for naptimes at Nana's for DD. Other than that, we use it when outside with all three kiddos and put the twins in there so they can watch what's going on. The bassinet on top for our pack and play was useless (only went up to 10lbs) so we used it once then got rid of it.

  • We have found them to be useful. We did use rock n plays at first, but now they sleep in the upper deck bassinet in our room because I wanted to transition them to flat sleep and wasn't ready to move them into the nursery. Before that we had one downstairs and one upstairs for a changing center and safe baby repository.

We plan to also use them for travel, but they are now big enough that we do need two. The used to fit in one.

If it's free and has the upper bassinet level, I'd take it and try it out.

  • We only used the rock n plays rather than the pack n plays as bassinets because the girls had reflux.

We are planning on using our PNP as the twins' bed for the first couple months.  If they want/need to be separated, we will switch to RnPs.

  • My boys are seven months. We do not own pack n plays. One set of grandparents bought two for when we travel to them. They are not a must but since they are free I would take them. Worst case scenario you don't use them and pass them along. Better to be over prepared.

  • We have one from when I had my oldest. The twins are ten months and we use it as a baby jail for when you need to pee or whatever have to leave them in a safe spot for a minute.

We have a twin PnP and a regular PnP. We used the bassinets on the twin PnP from 6 weeks (when E came home from the NICU) until we moved them to the nursery at 3 months. The twin PnP bassinets have horrible online reviews but it worked well for us. My friend who has twins 3 years older than mine gave me our second PnP (she insisted we needed two). We took both with us on a road trip but it was more trouble than it was worth. They almost always woke up when you tried to put them down and ended up sleeping in bed with us. Hopefully when they are older it will be more practical. If it's free, I'd take it and if you don't need it then pass it along.

  • Mine shared a PnP at the foot of our bed for the first 14 weeks until we made the transition to the crib, and now it lives by the front door and I use it as my "holding pen" for getting them in and out of the car - I put them both in there, then carry them out and buckle them in one at a time. Reverse the process for getting them in from the car ;).

  • We used it in the house when we needed to keep crawlers out of stuff, and for occasional naps/ travel.

  • My 16 month old still plays in his. When I need to make sure he is secure for a min or two, it is really handy. But if you are limit on space it may be more trouble than its worth.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the feedback!! Very helpful!! Sounds like it could be very useful at times! I'm leaning towards getting it and then if it just seems to be taking up space we can donate it.

  • We got a hand me down from my brother but have yet to use it. We used rnps for the first several months (and sometimes still use them) and now we are transitioning to the crib. They are not crawling yet, so during the day, they just play on the activity mat or sitting in boppies. There is no need to contain them in a pnp yet. Once they get mobile, it may be helpful to have a safe place to put them temporarily if I need to leave them alone, so we may end up using it then, I'm not sure.

We used the bassinet for them to nap in the first couple months. Now we use it as a downstairs changing station.

  • We have one. We used the bassinet for early months and the playard was helpful when my son started crawling. When my b/g twins were born my in laws were with us till they turned 3 months. So one baby slept with us in the crib while the other slept with grandparents in the pnp bassinet. We switched the babies every night so that they can spend equal quality of time with us and grandparents.

Honestly, the playard wasn't much of a help because when babies start crawling/become mobile, they don't like being restricted to one place. I used the playard when I had to use the bathroom or was in the kitchen. My son used to play in the playard for not more than 10-15mins. After that he used to cry to come out.

Pnps don't take much space when they're folded. All the best! HTH!
