Multiples

I am breaking up with my OB

I don't feel like he has enough experience with triplets. He used a Doppler today and couldn't find the heartbeats. Then he says don't worry about it. Yeah let me sit here and not worry about my babies. I know it isn't easy with a Doppler and sometimes you can't get the heartbeats but come on. My blood pressure is already getting high. I think I need someone a little more experienced.

We couldn't find our twins HB with a doppler until this past weekend.   We are friends with our MW so she offered to come over and try to find them for us for a little reassurance, but it definitely took awhile.   We had a hard time finding A because that one is still wedged low in my pelvis, while B was easier to find, and higher up, but still pretty quiet because there's more fat in front of them there.

I'm surprised you didn't get offered and U/S or something though, we were immediately offered to be sent for a scan when they weren't found.

You should definitely find someone who has the expertise and equipment you need for peace of mind though.  Good luck in finding someone.

  • Thanks. If he offered an us I would have felt so much better.
  • I'm mobile so I can't see how far along you are?

My OB didn't even try w the Doppler until 16w and even then said she might now find them both. My OB doesn't have an in-house u/s, so no way to check if she couldn't have found them.

Def change if you're not comfortable, but it is hard to find multiples w a Doppler.

  • I'm 13 weeks. It's not that he tried but he said "don't worry about it". He had an US machine right there. I feel bad breaking up with him because he delivered my other kids but I just don't feel comfy anymore.
  • Are you seeing an mfm or high risk specialist I hope? With triplets I definitely wouldn't go to a regular OB and would find a specialist.

  • He was sending me to a high risk dr june 19th for an anatomy scan. With my insurance I need an ob then my ob will send me to one. I found an ob withmore eexperience with this. She said she will do everything she does for new patients and refer me to a high risk dr.
  • I broke up with my OB too. I only see an MFM now. She sees 15% of her practice exclusively. I got mixed information from the various OBs in my original practice and they measured my cervix as 2cm longer than it actually was.

You have to advocate for you and your babies! Do what you need to do….

I would switch to a high risk doctor. I know two people that had triplets and their doctor never used a Doppler since you can't be sure you are picking up the heart rate for all 3 babies. They had a u/s at every appt to verify heart beats which only takes a couple of minutes.
  • Good for you!!! My OB never used a Doppler she used an ultra sound at every appt to check for heart beats and movement.

  • I'm almost 25 weeks with twins and just had my first Doppler last week. I've only had ultrasounds (every 2 weeks) up until this point. My OB and MFM wanted to look at growth and said it's much quicker to find both flickering heartbeats with a scan for the first few months. You are totally right to be concerned and making the right choice to move on, good luck!!

    A & K, married 7/1/13.

After 10 months of ttc via medicated IUIs and two early losses, we finally got our boys- Perfect premie twins born 5/27/14.

  • I broke up with my OB prior to my 12 week appointment. I felt bad too bc that practice had delivered DD. He told me Di-di twins were not high risk and no extra appointments/special treatment was necessary. I am now seeing an OB who is the chief of OB at my delivering hospital and has a lot of twin experience, and also seeing an MFM for all my ultrasounds. I feel a lot better about my care. I think you're doing the right thing!
