I had asked for some healing thoughts last week for my dad as the doctors had found a tumor in his face. Last night we had a family meeting as my parents got the biopsy results and it is adenoid cycstic carcinoma. The doctor did say he has patients who live for decades after this but it is a cancer that likes to follow along nerves. He will need to have an all day surgery where they will remove his jaw, his ear bone as well as several face nerves. They are using his shoulder bone to build his jaw again. Or part of it anyways. It will look like he has had a complete stroke and his speech will be affected. But the doctor seems positive that he will still be able to smile and open and close his eyes. He will need to be off work for atleast 3 months from the surgery and then another 6 weeks for radiation. The doctor kept reasuring them that this is what he does and he is good at it.
I also mentioned that my parents are still so in love after almost 32 years of marriage. Because I believe in the power of positive thought, I was thinking about love last night and everyones love story. It also happens to be 2 years this month since my DH asked me to be his wife.
I came home from work and dinner was made. I thought this was very strange and even asked him what he wanted. He assured me nothing, he just was home early and thought he'd cook dinner. We ate. Right after dinner he stood up and said "You know how I told you that your wish was my command? Well some wishes just take longer than others" and he pulled out a ring and got down on one knee. I just kept saying "Your serious right now?". It wasn't super romatic but it was still perfect.
Would any of you be willing to share your engagement stories or for those of you not married I'd love to hear the story of how you met your SO. Let's turn my frown upside down. Share your love stories with me!
Re: Update on my Dad and Your Love Stories
My H's proposal wasn't overly romantic, that just isn't us. It was while we were making dinner on a Tuesday. It really was perfect.
I love your story! It made me tear up a little bit! But I'm a huge baby like that.
DH got engaged at a Yankees game on the Jumbotron. Totally over the top and totally awesome. My classy self responded with "Are you f---ing kidding me?1?!!" and then 20 minutes later a yes.
MH and I were living together in a tiny apartment next to a park in the town where I was going to grad school. He had the ring and waited for it to snow one night so we could take a walk in the park like we often did. I was bundled up in sweat pants and boots, he got down on one knee in the baseball field under the lights and told me why he loves me. He knows how much I love snow

Jesse's proposal was a total surprise. We aren't very romantic or mushy people and I honestly thought he was months away from even being ready for such a thing. He took me back to where we had our first date, had our friends meet us there. He asked our friend who worked there to play the song "Sunshine" by G love and Special Sauce ... he stood up, got down on one knee, said a whole bunch of sweet things I couldn't hear over my blubbering and the music, and then asked me to marry him.

I actually blogged about our 'love story' this weekend- if anyone is interested I'll link HERE.
My engagement was sweet. I kept begging H to take a Santa picture with me at the mall the whole time we dated and he never would. Well we were going to a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in the city and he told me to dress festively, so I did. When I got to his apartment, we left and he wouldn't tell me where we were going. We ended up at the mall and he said he would take a Santa picture with me. I was so excited. We sat on santa's lap and Santa asked us what we wanted for Christmas. I said snow (I'm in south LA). H then went into a whole sweet thing about how he wants nothing more than to be his wife (there was much more but it was a blur). He got down on one knee and proposed and the photographers got it all. We sent out Christmas cards that year with our engagement pics.

DH invited our family to his family's house to swim and barbecue. After we ate he went in and got dessert and came out with bowls for everyone but a box for me and got down on one knee with both of our families around us. It was sweet
For proposal, I didnt have one. Living in France I was originally on a student visa and after two years of that I was done with French classes and wanted to get a normal family visa. We had already been PACsed, (a french civil union) which under the law would have allowed me to apply for a family visa since we'd been together more than a year. But I was afraid that my prefecture office would be difficult to deal with (they always were), so we went to our town hall to ask about our options. The middle-aged lady working there looked at our papers and said, "well, the only way you can be sure to stay in the country is to get married. And since it takes two months to do the paperwork to get married, and since I'm booked-up for weddings after the spring school holidays until your current visa expires in July, that gives us Saturday April 14 at 3pm or nothing." Being experienced enough in how things work in France, we said "okay, we'll take the reservation." Then walked back to our apartment realizing what we'd just agreed to do in just under two months.

As for a proposal- the proposal itself wasn't a surprise, but I had no idea how it'd go down. DH had told me on our 1 yr anniversary that he planned to propose on our anniversary next year (July). We broke up for a week the Nov after our 1st anniversary and so I wasn't sure if that was still his plan. As our 2nd anniversary got closer, the people around me started acting...funny...I lived 1.5 hrs away from my family and DH at the time and would call my Mom and she'd be really secretive about where she was or what she was doing (totally out of character for her...she's a terrible liar and she knows it).
I love reading everyone's love stories, so here's ours...sorry, it's a bit long...
DH and I have always been a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The 2nd one was scheduled to hit theaters on our anniversary so we decided to get tickets to go to the midnight showing. We decided that DH and I would go to dinner by ourselves to celebrate, then meet up with our friends at the theater. I knew our anniversary wasn't technically until the next day, but I expected him to propose at dinner...and he didn't. So we met up with our friends at the theater and actually ended up getting in a bit of a tiff before the movie started b/c I was telling him a story and he totally wasn't paying attention to what I said and I got irritated. After the movie, everyone got ready to go their separate ways and DH told my Mom he'd take me home (I stayed at my parents' when I was in town). Across the street from the movie theater was a restaurant DH and I used to frequent (my friend had worked there when we first started dating) and DH and I would meet there after work when we first started dating. IThat parking lot is where he 1st told me he loved me...
We pulled in and he asked if we wanted to go ahead and exchange gifts. I gave him what I got him (a picture frame and a journal of love letter from the past year). He said mine was in the back of the jeep, and I would need to come back there and get it. In the back was a small treasure chest, with a ring inside. DH was so nervous that as he dropped to one knee, he almost kissed the bumper of his jeep with his forehead....
Afterwards, when we got back to my parents' house, our friends were there all waiting for us (I didn't expect that).

As for our engagement, DH lived in Puerto Rico and I lived in SC (only temporarily). We only saw each other a couple times through our whole 2 year relationship but we had been friends for years before. It just took living so far away from each other for us to start dating I guess :-)
Anyway, we met up in Florida on one of our visits. There is an old Spanish fort in St. Augustine that looks like the old fort in Puerto Rico. Both forts are right by the ocean and H had always planned on proposing to whomever he married by the sea. So in the evening at the beginning of our visit, he walked me over to the fort and said he couldn't imagine keeping up this long distance relationship anymore. It was too hard to keep saying goodbye. Then he asked if I would marry him :-)
I just thought it was neat that he got to propose the way he always wanted in a place that was so similar to his home :-)
Well to start, DH and I went on a couple dates our senior year of high school. Our first one was at this nice Chinese restaurant. Also, he was on the baseball team, and I was a manager. So baseball has been a big part of our lives...
Flash forward to summer of 2011, we were living halfway across the country. We came back to our hometown for a visit. We went out for lunch at that same Chinese restaurant. Afterwards, he asked if I wanted to go check out our old high school baseball diamond, just for old times sake. I didn't think anything of it. We were standing on home plate, and I was bitching about the girl who had rear-ended me just days before, but DH started kissing me and acting weird. He said "Well I have something to ask you" and started digging in his pocket. I said "SHUT UP!!" Then he got down on one knee and popped the question, and I started laugh-crying. It was quite the surprise!

My proposal wasn't crazy or super romantic, but it was perfect to me. I got home from work on 11/11/11. My now-dh asked if I'd take the dog for a walk with him. I went to change out of my scrubs and when I got back to the kitchen I noticed he had on a suit jacket. He asked me to go out to the backyard with him and I saw that he had a fire in the fire pit and all of the tiki torches were lit. That's when I realized what was happening and I started crying. I don't remember what he said because I was in shock, which I really shouldn't have been since we'd been looking at rings. We sat outside by the fire pit and had a bottle of champagne. When we went back inside, I saw the time and got upset because I had missed the Tarheel basketball game. Then he told me he had DVRed it for me! We called our families and watched basketball. It was perfect. I found out later that one night when he said he was working, he really had gone to my parents and asked for their permission.
I love reading everyone's stories!!
I am sorry to hear about your dad, T&Ps for you and your family.
Our engagement: 6 years ago today, DH proposed at a concert for Radiohead (we're huge fans) during my fave song. He literally sent me to get beers and when I came back, I couldn't find him because he had taken off his top shirt. When I finally found our blanket (lawn seats, lol), he turned and dropped to one knee and busted out the ring. Since he knew it would be dark, he had a black under shirt with glued ironed on "name, will you marry me?" He said some real sweet stuff I could not hear but I loved it. He even had champagne in a cooler in the trunk for after.
Married since 09/21/2008, TTC now!

My DH and I dated for a month broke up but stayed friends. He would ask for advice for his gfs in that time. We eventually started dating again (obviously) and never looked back. I tease him for asking me advice about other girls.
He proposed under the century tree on campus after his graduation. With our families and my BFF there.

We were back in his hometown and we were going to go to dinner. We were a little tired so we thought we'd take a nap first. We didn't wake up on time, which I was ok with, but he clearly was not happy. So we rushed to get ready and on our way out he told me he wanted to go to the beach first.
He's speeding like a mad man and I finally told him 'I don't care how dark it is when we get to the beach, I just want to get there in one piece!' We got to the beach, walked a bit as the sun was setting, and he got down on one knee and proposed. I honestly was in complete shock. It was also the same spot he first told me he loved me ❤️
Then I proceeded to chase down a family, I'm sure they thought I was crazy!! I wanted them to take our picture
T&P to you, your father, and family.

DH was able to pull off an amazing surprise proposal. He had my Bestie break into my apartment and get a picture of a ring I loved. He had it made in secret. When it was ready, he had my Bestie tell me about a supposed buy one get one free deal at a wine country B&B. We already had plans for the following weekend to ski in Tahoe so I never thought he would go for it. He said he sold some stuff on ebay so we should go to the B&B with my Bestie & her DH too. The day we were leaving for the B&B he supposedly went to look at a washing machine with Bestie's DH (he was really picking up my ring). I had been starting to think he was acting weird & not as serious about me as I was him (it had been over a year). My Bestie said her DH had to do a work thing so they would meet us at the B&b later. When we got to the B&B I was hungry so we could grab lunch across the street. That is when he pulled out the ring & dropped to one knee (he couldn't wait any longer lol). I was in shock & also dropped to my knees to hug him. We went to lunch on cloud 9 & my Bestie & her husband showed up with flowers & took pics for us. That night we all went out to celebrate. The next weekend when we met a bunch of friends in Tahoe to snowboard I still couldn't believe the man of my dreams asked me to be his wife. We were tired of the long distance romance so we got married 6 months later & love each other more each day
