Trouble TTC

TTC with Clomid- any good advice?

Hi there,

I just finished up my first round of Clomid and had high levels with it. However we were unsuccessful at getting pregnant. We have been trying for a year and a half now and I had low levels of ovulation, hence the reason why I am on Clomid now. I am due to start my second round of Clomid tomorrow. I am taking it at night so I won't get any of the side effects; it worked the first time around. My question is (since I am becoming very impatient and depressed), has Clomid been successful for anyone TTC? How many times did you have to take it? I'm just getting really impatient and I swear babies are in my newsfeed all the time. Help!:/

Please tell me that you are being monitored while taking clomid.  Are you seeing an RE or an OB/GYN?  If you're being monitored, you should have an ultrasound to monitor follicle count.

If babies are in your newsfeed all of the time and it's upsetting you, maybe you should take a break from facebook or hide the offenders posts from your facebook feed.

    Warning .... Pregnancy Warning ....

I had my first IUI on March 22.  I used 100 mg clomid and I was successful.  Currently 8w3d pregnant.

Married on October 20, 2012.  Began trying in January 2013.
RE appointment & testing December 2013 - February 2014= Unexplained IF, possible endometriosis
IUI#1- March 22 (100mg clomid, 75 mg of Bravelle, Ovidrel trigger) = BFP!!!

  • My RE calls "success" with clomid any time there is ovulation. So if you in fact ovulated, clomid did it's job. You only have a 20% chance of getting pregnant even under the BEST of circumstances.
I agree with @CandaceC1020‌ If you're not being monitored with u/s that can be extremely dangerous. By "high levels" do you mean progesterone levels?

  • I will echo Candace's concerns. Clomid can be very dangerous if not monitored correctly. Don't mess around with that. Plus, remember, you can only take 6 months of it your whole life so I really hope you got an HSG and all the other standards test from an RE before starting. Good luck!

  • @theholmanherd‌ my RE and OB have assured me time and time again that there is no harm in additional rounds of clomid as long as I stimulate well and don't develop cysts. I have done over 10 myself. Is that something your RE had said?

  • Oh, I guess my doc was old fashioned! I opted not to take it anyway, but that's good to know. Sorry, OP!

  • And by old fashioned, I mean overly cautious or didn't see new research or overreacted to that study. I'm not sure how I should word that....it's early....

Yes I am being monitored by my OB. I did one follicle scan in the beginning but opted out after my first use because the cost is starting to add up, even with insurance. I am on 25mg for 5 days. I'm on a lower dose because of petite and short frame. I'm only 4'10", so they don't want to have the risk of twins.
Good advice about the news feed.

Sorry to clarify, yes I am under my OB guidance and orders. He does watch and test my levels on day 21. I wouldn't do anything without my OB's permission and medical advice.

I definitely agree that you need to go to an RE.  I did one cycle of clomid with my ob/gyn and it was enough to not do another one.  It all sounds good when they give you the instructions and make it sound so simple, but as NariaDreaming pointed out in her blog, as soon as you start asking questions you realize how unprepared they are.  There are so many more factors involved than if you have a cyst or if you ovulated, which is pretty much the extent of which any monitoring by an ob will give you.

  • @NariaDreaming‌ I am so glad that you responded to the "only 6 months of clomid in a lifetime" statement. That really gets under my skin because it isn't true! My RE said that most just stop at 6 cycles because it' wasn't effective in achieving pregnancy but that if you respond well to it and are being monitored, there is no harm in doing more cycles. I personally did 7. Thanks for adding in the studies as well. You are awesome!

OP, as others have mentioned, monitoring isn't just a progesterone check. My progesterone was always fantastic (30s-40s) on clomid and Ii wasn't successful at getting a BFP. There is so much more you need to know on these types of meds, such as your lining measurements, wether or not your tubes are open (HSG), and checking to see if you have cysts after the medicated cycle. These things are so very important even if they seem expensive. Good luck with your cycle!
